I have exactly the same problem only i'm on PS3 and my hubby the same. we cannot join each other, but yet a friend of ours can join us both separately! I took a few weeks away from the game and since i returned, all ive had is freezing glitches wich get me killed, connection errors which take me out of current activity - kill me - and immediately respawn me miles away, inventory takes AGES to load up in-game, etc, etc, etc!
Any ideas on the "Non-Fireteam mode" by Bungie would be appreciated.

Edited by calistolynn: 7/30/2016 6:01:03 AMsame here. my husband and I keep getting a message saying "cannot join the target player. please try again" and we both have PlayStations one beside the other and it all worked fine up until last two patches arrived. the other problem is that this bug seems to work selectively for us. 3rd person in our fireteam is my husbands cousin, and we do everything in-game together. I can join his fireteam, but my husband can't join on me or on him seperatley or together. it makes no sense because our network issues should not be any different, since we play from the same place so I'm not sure why it selectivly allows me to join his cousin but it won't allow my husband to join at all. it's really frustrating.
