Y2 Moments of Triumph Emblem & Shader Review

Who would have thought that the Moments of Triumph would lead to a moment of disappointment. As a snooty fashion lord, I will explain why. And no, the video is not some Destiny video on this, it's just a 36 second movie clip for comedic purposes that is vaguely relevant. Let us start with the emblems. Shield of the Traveler and Hear the Call emblems both have boring "regal" crests as their main designs, and they are surrounded by bland and forgettable background images. Both display very weak graphic design work compared to other emblems with very simple and effective designs like Dark Harvest and Queen's Guard Crests. They sadly also did not learn the use of strong geometry and lines from other existing emblems like Might of Vulcan, Flow of Knowledge, and Bastet's Dream. These shortcomings could be forgiven had the emblems made use of of stark bold colors and contrast to stand out like The Ascendant, Symbol of The Wolf, and Victory Eagle II, but instead the designers instead chose colors that only accentuate the mediocrity though low contrasts and muted tones—this is not to say that all emblems need use of bold colors and high contrast to stand out (see Flow of Knowledge for understated yet beautiful work), but when an emblem has nothing else going for it, then strong colors and contrast may help. The color hurts Hear The Call the most, as it makes it look somewhat similar to Might of Vulcan and other The Taken King solar subclass emblems, but it pales in comparison to them. It also does not help that the two designs are far too similar. Perhaps if each had their own unique design, one might have been good, or at least different enough to incentivize obtaining the next one, but sadly the only notable differences is the colors. The one good thing I can say about these emblems is that, while they are mediocre, they are not truly ugly like say the Blessing of IV or Crota's End. That said, I do not intend to ever use either. Judging Shaders is a different beast, as their aesthetic value dependent on the armor of the user, however, I did try a variety of different armors on warlock, titan, and hunter, and the results were similarly dissapointing. The Dawncaller, which is white, purple, and a pale yellow, is by far the strongest of these two. It looked passable on some armor sets like the Trials of Osiris warlock set, the Barkhan Dune sublime warlock set, and the the Jovian Guard set, but it was far from being an amazing must-have like the red and gold of Predawne, the bold purple of Walkabout, or the glowing white-blue-purple of Queen's Web. Caeslestis is an even more mediocre shader. While it's not as bad as literally any Future War Cult shaders, it's still a huge missed opportunity. For some time now, I've wanted a shader that uses both purple and yellow—purple for cloth, and yellow/gold for the bulk of the hard metallic pieces (would look great on my Trials warlock). This could have been what I've been looking for with some changes. The Caelestis is essentially the same as the as the Dawncaller, but the difference is it has a pale blue-green instead of a pale yellow. The difference is enough to make it look not as passable as the other shader (I saw some really ugly results on my hunter), but it's not different enough to make it shine with any other sets. If Dawncaller is "meh," Caelestis is "meh -1." Shield of the Traveler: 4/10 motes of Light Hear the Call: 3/10 motes of Light Dawncaller: 5/10 motes of Light Caelestis: 4/10 motes of Light Variety among rewards: 2/10 motes of Light Year 2 Moments of Triumph score: 3.6/10 motes of Light Salieri absolves you.
