Why shouldn't we steal?

Just a question. Why shouldn't you steal? Apparently, only about 10% of the population will come up with some sort of abstract moral reasoning to explain why we shouldn't steal. The rest will say something akin to, "Because we get in trouble," or, "Because it's against the law." Why shouldn't you steal? Edit: I'm an ardent supporter of property rights. I'm not implying that that theft is moral.

    • It also comes down to survival. If there's nothing to prevent or dissuade theft and it becomes common place you have chaos.

I take a sense of pride in earning what I have. I don't accept handouts, so I damn sure won't steal. Plus when you steal, you have to worry about people like me who will happily break your -blam!-ing fingers if you take my shit.

        • Laws exist for a reason. We give up some freedoms to live a political society where we can be safe. Lockes second treatise on civil government explains that. Also, I believe that one should earn what he has, and not take what isn't earned or receive hand outs for not working.

        • Stealing just causes so much bother. Like, the person you stole the tv or sofa or whatever from has to go about finding a new one, and you've likely caused them grief which is a lot of bother for them to sort out, along with broken doors / Windows etc. And then you have to do something with the stolen item if you don't intend on keeping it yourself, and then you have to worry about being caught and sent to jail, and so on. It's just such a bothersome thing for everyone involved.

        • Well think of it this way. "Stealing" is described as
take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it.
Now lets think about it for a second. Lets say theft is legal. I can go up to someone and take someone's wallet and they can't do a thing about it. Then someone can walk up to me and take that wallet. The wallet isn't owned by anyone. It is everyone's property. If everyone has it, nobody does. Nobody can claim it is theirs since someone can make the same claim. If nobody owns the wallet, it cannot be stolen. So if theft is legal, it breaks down the entire concept of theft and property. It is paradoxical and illogical. Thus theft is immoral and should be illegal.

Stealing is not allowed and we shouldn't steal because society cannot function properly and optimally if it was/if we do.

          • because taking something that isn't yours just isn't right not only because it is a betrayal of trust between people but it also deprives the thief the satisfaction of earning such things for themselves.

          • If I steal from a person that just means I wanted it more than them.
jk. Stealing is just wrong. Period. Would I steal? I guess if the opportunity presented itself. But I wouldn't go out of my way to steal and I wouldn't steal anything too important.
• Relationships between humans are built on trust. Stealing something from someone else ruins that trust, therefore damaging that relationship. If you stole stuff from people, no one would trust you or want to be associated with you which would lessen your chance of survival.

            • Because I personally don't want people stealing from me so I enter a social contract that in return for not stealing others shouldn't steal either and breach of contract can lead to jail. Boring explanation and not my only reason, but that's one concept I can think of.

                • People don't steal because society tells them so. Everybody has been taught at a young age either by your family or authority figures that their are some things one shouldn't do , for example like stealing. Their are also consequences put in place by society to deter people from breaking rules. For example: fines, jail, death. People are social beings, we only survive by working together. Stealing, only benefits one person and it can disadvantage others. It only makes sense then that society would put in place rules that keep it together. If everybody stole and murdered then that would ultimately destroy society.
