Who Are We?

I've been working on a story based in Destiny's universe, and in doing so I've been reading up on the lore trying to get an idea of where to go, how to fit it and get it to make sense. I stumbled into reading about Skolas, the Wolves, and the Reef. Throughout the Grimoire, it's abundantly clear that Skolas does what he does in the best interest for his people, all Eliksni. Whether he is misguided in his belief in the House of Rain's prophecy is sort of irrelevant, for he is doing what he feels is right. But his story is sad, as is with the entire Eliksni race. Skolas is captured by the Queen and later given to the Nine. In the card it talks about this, his cell cracks open and he's filled with rage, guilt, feelings of betrayal and foolishness. It describes him as making a few snapped attempts at demonstrating is rage and power. He's ultimately released by the Nine, and goes on a quest to rally his species - an attempt to make them whole again. After all his attempts to do so, he is shut down by the Queen's amethyst fist, using us to capture him once more. In the card describing his second capture, he's locked in a cage beneath the floor, bellowing in anger and eventually calls in a tone described as a roaring whine - sadness. Realization that he's failed again, and is reduced to a beast in a cage, hopeless. They continue, they being the Queen, Variks, Uldren and the foremost Reef "group," discussing what to do with him. Eventually the Queen says to Variks that Skolas is his, and says, "Let the children of Light have their play with him." That struck me. Is that all we as Guardians are? Never questioning morality? The only thing that matters is obtaining more strength and our treasure? I realize Skolas would have destroyed the city, we had no choice to stop him, but the way the events line up to end him is absurdly immoral to me. We destroy a sentient prisoner that is wracked with a disheartened state of mind. I'd go as far to say he's extremely depressed, and we "play" against him, in a realm he cannot escape, and kill him - no questions asked. I know it's only a game and a story, but a good story evokes questions and emotions from you, and it's certainly done so with me. I feel bad when I have to kill Fallen. I don't want to do it, and I honestly wish I had more of a choice in the game to pick my battles and enemies. I've grown to respect Fallen, especially Skolas. Chelchis too, but that's a different story.

  • I look at it this way: we can establish harmony with the Eliksni, but our battle is with those that call themselves the Fallen.

  • The guardians throughout the story are killing machines. If you want even more proof, there's a video on this show called Game Theory on YouTube. The channel is great. If you find this interesting, you're bound to find the destiny video interesting, as well as their other videos.

  • Guardians are pussies who still use weapons with horrid recoil and no elemental damage. Simply put they are the douchebags of the sci fi universe. They would get pub stomped by every other fairy tale, even moronic pokemon.

Promises of power and great rewards help to keep Guardians in the fight against the Darkness and distract the mind from questioning its actions.
oh reader mine
• It's not like the queen was water boarding skolas. Imprisoned him so he wouldn't raise the masses and cause additional chaos among the reefs peaceful awoken. Awoken and fallen, one light and the other darkness. Same race, I believe, seperated by hate, fallen kill anyone who don't agree with their ways and refuse to change their ways and stick to the old ways. Metaphors are everywhere in the game, it's your morality the makes you. To look evil or in this case darkness, in the eye and say the feel bad for them is a humanitarian response. You always have a choice, it's up to you to make the right one.

      • We are merely pawns being moved to commit genocide on anyone deemed an adversary. It's not our fault, we are psychologically conditioned from youth to follow orders from those deemed authorities and then risen from death via "light" to fight the battles. The Traveler and the Speaker, and by extension the whole Vanguard, are our authorities. The Milgram Experiment. Awesome perspective.

        • I respect the fallen quite a bit. Their sense of honor does not match that of the Elites in the halo series

          • Skolas is a metaphor for the prison industrial complex. When he's first arrested he's a small time crook, easy enough for one guy to apprehend and take in. A few weeks in prison and he's a hardened criminal getting involved in shootouts to the death with multiple guardians. Proof that prisons brutalise their inhabitants.

              • Here's a crazy thought, we are no different than the taken, we have just been consumed by light, not darkness
