The Etiquette of the Heavy Ammo Crate (Refresher Course)

It's Iron Banner again, which means that once again, people who don't normally play PvP are trying to remember how. This also means- yes, you guessed it- someone is on the forum telling them that they're opening the heavy ammo crates too soon. There's a certain etiquette involved in opening the crate when you're on a team. If you're the only one at the crate, and there's no red on your radar, DON'T OPEN THE DAMN CRATE. I can't put it more clearly than that. Wait for the rest of your team so they get some heavy ammo as well. Obviously, it's a judgement call sometimes. There may be a red line at the edge of your screen... in that case, is your team closer than the enemy? Can you wait for them? Or do you have an enemy bearing down on you, lusting for your chitlins, so that you have to pop the crate or risk losing it to the other team? But other times, there's no judgement to be made. It's a clear case of seeing that half of your team is still converging on the crate, knowing that the enemy is nowhere in sight, and just not caring. Yes, there's an announcement when heavy ammo is inbound. But on many maps, that's still not a lot of time to get to the crate from wherever one happens to be, especially since there's actual fighting taking place. Not everyone arranges their game around the drop timer. Sometimes it's just bad luck. Whatever the case, delaying a second or two is not going to cost you the game, and having a few more players with heavy ammo might actually affect the outcome. Many a loss has turned into a win, and vice-versa, based on some heavy kills at the right time. Think about it next time you're tempted to open that crate all by yourself.

  • Just open it right away. I don't have time to waste to "wait" for my abyssal minded teammates that can't hold the damn gun properly. Those 5+ seconds wasted waiting while the other team already picked theirs up is allowing them to better pinch all of us and wipe our team. So no. Do not wait

    • Or you know, if your not there, sucks to be you. I mean its not like there isnt some sort of announcement that specifically says heavy ammo inbound or its not like it spawns at the same time every match or something like that. You snooze you lose. Im not waiting on someone not there in time

      • This is true. But, you have to consider the fact that the other team could be stacked at the other heavy crate. Which means they're going to grab it and haul ass up to your crate. While you can still grab it in time to stop them from getting both, you're probably going to die, meaning the rest of your team still didn't get any heavy, and now you don't have it either. I think we all know what happens when only one team has heavy. It's a judgement call. If there are blueberries closing in, wait as long as you can. If not, and your radar is seeing red, maybe you should grab it. Regardless, you should never wait too long, or your team will be screwed.

        • I notice a lot of players are aiming at the crate so I stand with my back to it and keep an eye out for anything that won't show on radar/motion tracking while we are waiting

          • I always wait, but I also think the etiquette should include the other side of it. Anyone that wants it should get their butt to the crate so the ones there waiting don't get bombed so often. Now that it only shows up once, it is also important to pull it before the other team can get it.

          • The corollary here is, if there's at least three of you standing next to the crate and your radar turns red, POP THE -blam!-ING CRATE before everyone gets wiped out and the other team leisurely strolls up, teabags your ghosts, and opens the crate.

          • Well, common sense must rule on this one. Yes, everyone needs to wait for most of their teammates to get to the crate before opening it. However, there are times where I'm waiting and most of my team is there and I can tell they're also waiting for that one last teammate to come in and open the crate. And he's really close and all and yay we're all gonna get heavy. Then a member from the opposite team noticed were camping at our crate, loads his rocket launcher from like 10 miles away and wipes us all. And now they can get the second crate too. You won't even see them in your radar. Heck, I usually do that if I get the chance. So as a personal rule, I wait about 5 seconds after the other team opened their heavy crate, just for safe measure. After that, I'll try my best to wait longer than that but it's also fair game.

          • I always look away from heavy ammo for team area because I've seen countless people looking down for the 10 seconds and picking it up immediately when they could have saw me running for it

          • While I applaud your attempt at informing the community on how to not be selfish, you're screaming into the void on this one. The people who grab heavy before their team arrives does not care about winning, or helping their team, they are here for their one-week-out-of-the-month PvP session and want to use that new rocket launcher they got!
