Destiny lore error

Now I don't know if I'm the first to notice this but I'm saying this anyways. There is an error in the destiny lore. Now I'm not a big lore reader but I am a major history buff and while reading up on something I discovered something that bungie should've noticed. The problem is with the Vault of glass. More specifically one of the unique units. More specifically praetorians. To put it simply praetorians were the elite guard of the land. They protected their leader faithfully and dutifully. Seems like the ones in VOG right? Well here's where you're wrong. Praetorians were the ROMAN emperor's guards. Meaning they should've been used for the cabal. They could've been properly used in a cabal raid. This shocked me in the fact that Bungie would miss something like this Edit: to all saying that the Colossus and phalanx are a part of Greek mythology: they were also a part of the Romans too. Edit: to those of you saying that the phalanx was Greek and the Testudo( I think that's how it's spelt) is Roman. They are the same thing just using different words.

    • Okay the phalanx was a Macedonian formation consisting of a tight pack of sarissas (damn long spears) that would form an almost impenetrebal wall of sharp spears The testudo was a roman formation were they raised their shields into a tight formation for protection again projectiles So not the same thing And yes not completly grammaticly correct, thats whats happens when you wright om your phone with norwegian autocorrect

      • If I remember anything from my 6 grade history it's that the Spatans used a phalanx war tactic and Legionary are the... Persians? Right? I think it was the Persians. I don't remember.

      • In context, the Praetorian's help guard Atheon, so their name fits. Considering how we will never likely fight the Cabal Emperor, we will likely not encounter his guards.

        • It doesnt look like an error to me. They can name enemies whatever they want, its not like the game follows a real history line.

            • I see what you are getting at but as the guardians encountered the Vex and fought through the ranks to reach the Vault. They must have noticed something different from that type of troop. As they dwelled deeper into the vault, they found the Vex leadership in there. As praetorions were the protectors of the emperor, these troops protected the Vex King. They were no mere monsters.

                • Um this isn't a lore error. This doesn't contradict anything. Bungie has their reasons for naming specifically naming things and until you find out why they specifically named those vex praetorians then you have nothing to back up your foolish claim.

                  • So how is this a lore error? The cabal may be explicitly called an empire, but ever since Quria Blade Transform deduced the sword logic, the Vex have become empyrical as well. Don't even get me started with the Hive. There have been many more empires than the Roman one as well. Bungie chose to use that aspect of Roman military for the Vex to highlight the function of those units within their cultural context. Just as they use other names to do so for other races like captains for the Fallen. It's not a lore error in any way. Unless it was explicitly mentioned that the Vex were supposed to be modeled after a different cultural empire, especially the praetorians. But that's not the case.

                    • Phalanx started with the hoplites. Then greeks. Not romans. Or account that the vex take parts and ideas from other races to make themselves better

I sorta agree with you. If you look at the names of the rest of the Vex mobs. Minotaur, Goblin, Hobgoblin, Harpy, Hydra... All Greek origins Praetorian wouldn't make sense because it's based on Roman. Like Cabal names, Legionary, Phalanx, Centurion, Colossus... Roman Based. But the Vault is a little different. Praetorians are defenders. And there isn't a common knowledge Greek defender besides the Minotaur, which that namesake was already taken. And I'm assuming that Guardians named the Vex creatures and just went for ancient myths and legends because of how ancient the Vex are.

They obviously were inspired by Roman military for Cabal names and then creatures of myths for Vex names. But they probably just thought the Praetorian sounded better than any of the other options. What would you have them change it to, OP?

                                      • But if you do the Valus Tu'uarc strike. At the end boss fight look at the phalanx's shields. They have a unusual mark on them. This could mark them as praetorians. But your VoG theory. Praetorians protect their emperor correct? Well the Vault of Glass is a living Vex machine. Their emperor even. Although the reason they are named praetorians is unknown to this day.
