I think the real problem is weapon variety; people want to win so they gravitate to what works. In a meta without some weapons being of use (the mythical sidearm and fusion rifle I rarely see 8n crucible) different load outs simply aren't as viable.
I always play to win, but I agree I would like variety in how to win without hurting my chances by selecting a unpopular weapon.

There has literally never been more variety then there is right now. Crucible devs confirmed this and discussed the fact that all weapon types are close in numbers used .

Yes. The problem is that only a handful of weapons are competitive. Everything else has just been nerfed into into the ground. You can't just have fun with different load outs because their ttk is absolutely shit because bungie destroyed them.
