Mystin, First, I'm sorry you've been having a rough time in PVP with regards to SBMM.... It is so hard for me to read your post and not feel a wee bit contemptuous towards your plight. Stay with me though, because I'm going to stay on the high road with you while I attempt to offer a different view by way of a counter-point to your situation. I've attempted to see your situation not through my eyes but rather truly understand through your perspective. However, let us consider all those potential players that you would be matched against if SBMM was turned off. I'll use myself for example... I'm speaking as someone who is in the top 53% in terms of K/D with an overall score of 0.97. So mathematically, my PVP skill is representative to roughly half of the total community (as opposed to your being within the super minority of 1%). 1. Regarding your situation w/SBMM and attempting to casually PVP with your girlfriend. It appears that you are failing to have fun due to your OP competitive nature. For example, I recently did the "Refer-a-Friend" thing and brought my very young nephew into Destiny. As we were leveling up his shiny new Titan, we went into the Crucible to knock out a few bounties... At first we got killed.... a lot..... But thank goodness for SBMM because eventually (after Shaxx breaking up a lot of teams) we were able to get enough kills to satisfy the bounties we were after. I had a great time because the whole point was to play with my nephew and eventually we could win a few. As a side note, SBMM prevented me from effectively "carrying" which many of us find annoying (when 1 or 2 players can carry an entire fire team and almost single-handedly wipe out the opposing team). 2. The fact that you felt the need to "create" a new account just to test out the "new changes," indicates to me that you don't want that precious K/D of yours to suffer while you "casual" it up and "have fun." Or, you miss a good ole Pub Stomp that SBMM has been denying you... Either way, looking at this in the most favorable light, I'm still coming up with the perspective that you just can't help yourself and continue to fail at the "fun" part. In other words, nobody but an uber OP competitive try hard would even consider what you did;"create a new account just to test out the new changes." Listen Bro, if you want to have fun, just let it go man.... Just take an "I don't care about my K/D (winning)" attitude and go uber casual mode. If you're not truly afflicted and can shake this OP competitive condition, you'll actually have fun.... :D 3. By the way you started this conversation, I infer that your K/D is important to you and in fact, a point of pride. Further, as you roll out your "competitive" resume (12 years worth apparently) in your appeal for SBMM to "be an optional experience," I couldn't help but get the notion that you simply don't know how to be non-competitive. I think a more honest way to define your position is that you want to win without having to try "sooooo hard." Truthfully, if you spend the better part of a weekend nerfing your K/D into oblivion than you'll start being matched against lesser skilled opponents like me. But the jeopardy there is that as soon as you start casually stomping us into the ground you'll be back to square one. 4. SBMM is a great concept for the majority of players out there. Is it flawed, yes. The lag is a big problem. However, with the potential of the new "damage referee" coupled with SBMM has potential to move us closer to that sweet spot that benefits the community (writ large vice you 1 percenters). I know this isn't what you probably wanted to hear but if you could afford to look beyond your 1% and consider Bungie's attempt to accommodate the greater majority you could be more understanding of their intentions with SBMM. If you really care about creating a fun PVP experience with your girlfriend and value that over your K/D, you'll find the solution was in front of you this whole time. :D Just have fun like I did playing with my nephew! After all, isn't that the whole point?

  • Abuse? What? What are you taking about? You are the problem. Nobody will work hard at anything if they know they won't get anything out of it. So you think practice shouldn't get you anything? Why is hard work related to abuse to you? You are crazy... and your analogy is so far fetched.

  • I also grew up in a world where 7 year olds didn't play ball against 17 year olds. They generally participated in programs with a skill based balance, especially when learning the game. But I guess you're right. The best way to learn to swim is to be thrown in 10 miles off shore. It's a good thing real life doesn't work like you propose. Unless we're supposed to drop our kids in the wild and expect them to survive. You better reject any compassion in life, especially wrt video games. It's serious shit!!

No. SBMM is aids. Sorry. You're wrong. It's hard to "have fun" when every game is a laggy sweat fest.

  • It's strange how high level players are haveing sweaty tryhard games when matches with similar skilled players but lower level players are having fun and find it an enjoyable experience and challenge when matched with similar skilled players.

Maybe because there are way more bad players then there are good? The top 1% should be just as entitled to have non laggy pvp as the rest.

  • If you ever play against a 1% player who streams, you get a unique opportunity to analyze what your experience is versus what their experience is. You'll find when playing that they are killing you before you even see them, but then when you check the stream, it seemed like they had 2 seconds to casually line up the shot. Sbmm bothers these players because it removes their advantage. Damage referee should them down another notch as well so that everyone can enjoy a balanced experience.

  • Eh. Pretty lame that we all pay the same amount but the good players get punished for being good

What?! Wait, are you suggesting that life at the top is rough...? Is it like everyone is trying to knock you down up there? Wow? If only you could come down and interact with us lesser folk that'd be better for you huh?

  • No one wants to have a sweat feast in every single match they play. A good player can't help but be good it's a competitive shooter no one likes losing/dying. So what because someone's "good" they can't have an enjoyable experience playing destiny? Why should someone who has put in the time and effort to be good be punished with shitty connection and sweaty matches?

  • Dude, think about what your saying here... You're asking me to feel bad that a good player can't have an enjoyable experience by being allowed to straight pub stomp me... Did you honestly think this post through? Did you honestly think I'd be like... Oh CurlyMuch, man I didn't consider that it would not be as much fun for a good player to be matched against other good players... I shall present my low skill carcass to you straight away and don't you worry for one second about my miserable experience just as long as you're happy! As far as lag/connection, wait for the "damage referee" to be widely implemented, it's only a matter of time.

  • You miss the point I don't mind sweaty games it's the combination of a 3 gun meta due to gun "balancing" at the same time that sbmm was implemented. There's no argument it's just different perspectives sbmm without a casual playlist sucks for someone who plays competitively but doesn't want to sweat their face off every game. I really enjoy screwing around with the NLB and a sidearm but I'm terrible with both I would like to use those guns without having to eat a face full of mida constantly . Is that me going on a pub stomp rampage? No. That's me trying to enjoy myself and play casually with weapons in subpar with.

Okay, I'll bite. How can "we" devise a "casual" playlist without forcing a low/high skill mismatch? Answer: Custom Games However: Good luck finding low skill players that would voluntarily go into these matches... I'm sure a few might but chances are that many won't. Recently after being inspired by KJHovey I went into the crucible with the NLB/Sidearm load out. Result: I got killed a lot more than normal, I got a few kills; not many. But, I was happy because it was an expectant situation with a not so surprising result. Would you not agree that if I immediately moaned about SBMM as a result of my experimentation (or screwing around as you put it) that I was being a little ridiculous?

Easy solution split it into two playlists. I'll pull an example from League of legends. I go into ranked sweating my ass off trying to win after I've had my fill of the sauna. I go into casual so I can learn a new champion or to have fun going against the meta. It doesn't shit on my rank so I don't have to try to win or do good at all I simply have fun. This is the only solution that works for both parties. Edit: if someone who sucked didn't want to get stomped they could play ranked and play against people near their skill level.
