Why SBMM is ruining the game, from a top player

Edit: I am really happy to see such great discussion in here, but after reading various replies, there seems to be a lot of people misinterpreting my post. Let me be clear - SBMM, in a vacuum, is a good thing. It promotes an even playing field where everyone has a chance to be on top and improve. I stated multiple times in my post that I am actually in favor of SBMM, but it must be contained to specific playlists, like Trials or Iron Banner. The core argument that I, along with many others are making is how Bungie is forcing SBMM across nearly every playlist. Revert back to having a casual connection-based group of playlists, and in addition create a ranked SBMM playlist or "league" where people can choose to participate in. I am speaking as someone who is in the top 1% in terms of K/D (2.9 in Clash/Control, 3.1 in Trials) and Win%. Please do not mistake me coming off as arrogant or elitist, I am merely providing a perspective. Skill-Based Matchmaking across most/all playlists needs to go. Period. My girlfriend and I use to always play Destiny together, mostly PvP, until last August when we started to do a bit of traveling together. We were thrilled to pick it back up, but already she wants to quit. We can no longer play together due to SBMM. I am posting from my new account, which I created solely to test out the new changes. I queued up with her for the first 10-15 games of my new Titan before my K/D started increasing, and we were being matched with players at her skill level. After multiple trial runs of queuing separately, the skill disparity between her games when she queued solo and with me, was enormous. When she queues solo now, she always gets at least 8-10 kills, but with me, she struggles to get 2-3. After 12 years of online gaming, I have never dealt with a system as frustrating as this. A competitive, evenly matched PvP environment is great, and it's one of the reasons why I love Trials in Destiny, but it needs to be an optional experience where players can choose to participate in when they want to. Bungie wants SBMM? Fine, then put it in Trials where it belongs. At the very least, there needs to be a clear separation between dedicated SBMM playlists, and CBMM playlists. Forcing it upon every player for every PvP match is not only absurd, it’s pushing people away from the game. Is this what Bungie wants? To alienate PvPers across different skill levels? You advertised your game to incentivize playing with one another. Aside from my girlfriend, my other friends I used to play with no longer want to queue with me or even with one another due to the skill disparity. The state of PvP is completely backwards right now. Originally introduced as the go-to competitive environment, Trials has now become the most laid back game type. Aside from the fact that my girlfriend can no longer enjoy playing PvP with me due to getting stomped by everyone in the game, I can barely stomach solo queuing myself. As I said earlier, I love competitive PvP, it is one of the reasons why I ran Trials so much every weekend, but having a hyper-competitive sweat fest forced on me every single game is ridiculous. After reading several topics similar to this, it’s pathetic how many players are using the “Oh look, another elitist try hard is butt hurt because he can’t roflstomp noobs anymore” card. This cannot be any further from the truth, one of the most enjoyable things for me was queuing up for Crucible to relax and try out some cool builds and weapon setups solo or with my friends. I can’t even do this anymore because every game I’m in is full of tryhards running top tier, cookie cutter builds. SBMM is also a nightmare for any good players due to how the search functions. Instead of being pure connection based, the system tries to match you primarily with players around your skill level, which are very likely in different countries. Because of this, you end up with laggy, teleporting players and a completely degenerative experience. Crimson doubles - what another great example at how terribly flawed SBMM is. My girlfriend and I were looking forward to doing doubles during this "Couples' Valentines Event." Across seven games with me, she got 3 kills; every game we were matched against people my skill level. My girlfriend can't even enjoy a special event MADE for friends and couples due to SBMM. I rarely post on forums, but it really depressed me when last night, during Crimson Doubles, my girlfriend flat out said “This is it, I quit. This isn’t even fun for me anymore.” She got the game for the sole purpose of playing PvP with me. Because of SBMM, the great experience we use to share has been taken from us. I could probably go on with this for a while, but I did the best I could to condense this and keep it concise. When Destiny came out, it immediately became my favorite game. The friends and connections I have made through this game will stay with me for the rest of my life. I actually found this incredibly difficult to write, due to what Destiny means to me and how frustrating it is having that ruined by Bungie’s warped perception of how PvP “should” be.

  • Surely if you're in the top 1% that means 99% of your games will be unsuitable if there was purely connection based matchmaking. So over 100 6v6 games you have one even match against 6 top guys... and potentially ruin the game for the 594 other opposing players you trounced without a fight? Not sure I'd want that personally.

    • If you wanna play like a tryhard, you'll be matched with tryhards. Honestly I don't care, I don't care about my K.D so I generally have a good connection match no matter what matchmaking is in used. This only affects Pubstompers. Sweaties (nKuch, Luminosity, Anbu) arent affected by it as much as people likr TrueVangaurd, Kjhovey, and Holtzmann

SBMM would be OK for me. But for some reason it thinks I'm the best player on the planet, and I'm really not. Every game I play is incredibly sweaty and frustrating, and it just isn't fun. Not to mention the lag. Match me with Eastern US/Canada players, and nobody else. And match me against other 1.6ish kd players. Not 3.0s please.

      • Every time I see Skill-Based Matchmaking abbreviated SBMM, my brain reads it SSBM and I wonder what the hell Super Smash Brothers: Melee has to do with Destiny. True story.

        • Personally, i have the feeling that SBMM was always there. Whenever anybody is playing 6v6 with me, its almost impossible for him to cover his overall stats. Therefore, almost nobody likes to play 6v6 with me anymore, unless we have a pre-game team of at least 4 players. I did like 90% of all my 6v6 games on my own and i have a 4.48 kd overall in clash combined with a 54% win ratio. Its still the same for me, nothing has changed. According to my calculations my average team mate goes negative 6-7 and therefore my average 5 team mates are negative 30-35.

SBMM would do fine for ranked matches, ToO and even Iron Lagger I agree but since Durpstiny is definitely not built with an overall competitive atmosphere CBMM needs to replace SBMM for every other mode. Granted in game modes like ToO should have it as that is built around it being competitive for people to get to the Lighthouse for loot(even though it's crappy now), but otherwise Bungie just has no clue where they're going with PvP. I myself liked doing PvP just to have fun, play with buddies, blow off some steam or try out weird loadouts in the past, but it being constantly try-hards vs try-hards cookie cutter loadouts really ruins the experience. Once SBMM was in and Bungie turned people to using snipers due to extensive nerfs that just ended PvP for me and even a lot of my PvP friends. Personally when DOOM comes out this year my PvP will primarily be there because the way it is there is you can customize literally every aspect of the match. Great way to have fun with friends or organize scrums in there that which Durpstiny lacks tenfold. Plus the gore and bloody kills adds a certain satisfaction that which Durpstiny lacks too :).

People see SBMM too many times wrong. Mostly, playing with different players is playing on different internet connections. It's combination of their CONNECTIONS! I'm playing first person shooters on consoles from 2006 almost every day and back then, there was no SBMM. Example 1: Full party of 6 owning big time. Then 1 goes away and the other player comes instead: everybody lag, losing almost every game. Example 2: On Trials playing with 2 same friends, i can make kills. One friends leaves and the other comes instead. Suddenly i can't make kills any more. Nothing to do with skills or SBMM. Believe me: Mostly it's just the combination of connections.

              • I see your point. My brother and I are typically about a .4-.5 kd in trials, but are getting better. But our buddy is a 1kd+ player. It is a highly noticeable difference between grouping with my brother, and grouping with my buddy. Solo queue I'm typically at the top of the score board getting 20+ kills and almost always a positive kd, but if I group with my buddy, I'll often get a .2kd, and 5 kills of I'm lucky. It's quite aggravating. The three of us like to group up, but quickly become irritated as it's everything we can do to get wins.

                • I've read some of these comments, and wow. Personally, I completely understand. I consider myself to be a pretty decent PvP player. Sometimes I want to try hard and be sweaty and fight to improve my accuracy or reaction time, or sensitivity training...things like that. Other times I just want to play, explore, have fun, and be able to say, "Wow, that was a great shot". TO CLARIFY A POINT NOT MANY SEEM TO UNDERSTAND, I, for example, never intend to just go into a match and wreck the other team, nor do I want to every game. I enjoy seeing non-sweaties in the crucible, and I enjoy playing with people like that, not because I "can crush them", no! It allows me to relax and play the game for its intended purpose: have fun. Sometimes I want to work on improving, but other times I want to test things out, mess around, CASUALLY play. With SBMM, I can't do that. Every match is a brutal try hard fight to the win, and everytime I tell myself, "Let's try out this new weapon I got! :D", I get forced to either go back to what I'm good with and used to(Not what is just OP and gives an easy win for everyone), or face complete and utter defeat. You get faced with the kind of helplessness as a noob in a 9th game of flawless Trials. You feel like sh/t pretty much. No wonder everyone uses the same guns over and over. It's either face defeat or stick with what you know and you're used to.

Nope Sbmm forces you to get better, and if you're at the top Well guess you don't get to stomp randoms anymore Want to play co-op? Play pve, in addition to that destiny pvp isn't competitive for shit, so not sure why you're getting your nuts in a knot over sbmm

                    • isn't getting better the whole point? As you get better in a game or real life it should be expected that you will be challenged by those that are getting better or were better then you before you got better? If you don't challenge your self how will you get better? the argument seems to me is that the top tier (1 to 5%) players just want to coast and pad their KD/ELO's and not fight it out with each other to find out just who is the best PvP play in the game. So it just sounds to me that your afraid to even try and see just who is Top Gun in PvP and in my average eyes makes the lot of you top tier players a bunch of wimps

                      • I thought the SBMM argument was relegated to COD. Look if that's the meta in COD that's fine, stick with it. But people who have come from a Halo background expect ranked matchmaking. It's how you get good at the game. Most of us get bored stomping out more casual players. The SBMM argument is total BS and it is kinda pathetic to ask for it. Sack up bro, online FPS is competitive. Dance or die.

                        • I absolutely love the new match matching system. I rarely played PVP in year 1 after finding several YouTube videos of pros talking smack against casual players. Having matches that are more competitive now is priceless.

                        • You want SBMM to be selective. Not how networking works. You want multiple avenues based on player selections like better connections? That's how programming works. Here's the thing OP and everyone: If you start on a sole, "the server was good at start and then we loaded up the match and it went to hell" Then you don't have an issue with the Bungie server. The only thing they actually control. It's ironic I work in telecommunications and it's your service provider you need to be talking to about increasing capacity of all towers then Bungie... So to point? Bungie now is trying to prioritize certain connections based on IP address frequencies to certain servers so the refresh and closer proximity helps counter balance the lose from an internet provider connection due to many internet requests hitting the tower at the same time.

                        • I wish I could show all of you how terrible an experience it is to be a top-tier player who also happens to play solo, how agonizing it is trying to use new, unique weapons and have some fun but literally be punished doing so. I know that most of you average PvP'ers are enjoying crucible right now, I've seen you talking about how you aren't being pummeled anymore and how you can actually go positive on a regular basis. I've watched my little brother play crucible (he's 14, I'm 20), and the skill difference between us is laughably noticeable. But what's more laughable is the people he gets paired against in PvP. I've seen kids literally trying to melee him from 20 yards away, throw grenades that miss him by half a football field, and some who aren't even capable of walking and shooting at the same time. He used to hate crucible before TTK because in his words "everyone was just too good". Now he loves it, and because he's unaware of this whole SBMM thing, he thinks it's because he's suddenly gotten a lot better. You wanna know why you enjoy crucible so much now? Because you suck, and everyone you play with sucks now too. But not only that, the people you play with haven't had enough time to get meta weapons like MIDA, The Last Word, Doctrine of Passing, and SUROS PDX-45. They use whatever weapons they have at the time, resulting in a much more varying build demographic. When you get to my skill level, though, it's either those 4 weapons I mentioned above, or nothing at all. You HAVE to use meta weapons, you HAVE to conform to what everyone else is using, otherwise you stand no chance. THAT is the main reason why so many of us skilled players don't enjoy crucible anymore, because we can't use the guns we want and still be competitive.

                        • I hated SBMM at first, but now the lag seems a lot better, at least for me. As a poor crucible player I'm really enjoying things like getting kills and even occasionally winning a match. I avoided crucible just because I would always get stomped by great players. I'm fine with learning from good players, but when the skill gap is so massive, there's no learning. In other games I've been the great player stomping on noobs and that's not fun either. People who enjoy totally dominating a game should play single player games on easy mode or something.

                        • So basically you are salty that you have to play with people on your own skill level instead of stomping on random players? Consider, those randoms were probably just as salty about you stomping on them... And they aren't getting payback, they're getting a level playing field. If you got your wish, and sbmm was limited to a few modes, guess where those randoms you feel entitled to stomp on would go? The sbmm games. If you're idea of fun is beating players you are way better then, you are basically the college or pro football player whining that they aren't allowed to go play with the middle school team. Besides which, in competitive PvP the goal should be to get better. You don't do that stomping noobs, or being massacred by some sweaty pro. You get better by playing people at or just a bit better then you, so you have to push your limits to win.
