Why I'm leaving Destiny and the community (salt free)

First of all please let me assure you this isn't a "-blam!- you Bungie I quit" or an "(insert game) I'm leaving for is going to kill Destiny" it just my attempt to put into words my feeling I hope it comes across salt free. I love Destiny. I loved the idea of it before it was released and even though we didn't quite get the game we were originally promised I loved what arrived.  What Bungie released was an awesome, original and beautiful game.  I enjoyed playing the story (and didn't mind that I had to read most of it outside the actual game) I enjoyed the PvP although to be honest I was terrible at it. But what really grabbed me was the raid.  The first time I descended into the Vault of Glass with a bunch of friends I had met through LFG I was mesmerised the mechanics the atmosphere it was almost overwhelming. We didn't finish it that first time and I'm actually glad we didn't. We came back and tried again the next time we were all online. It was such an achievement beating it. Forever 29 lol, it wasn't bad, it wasn't a grind I knew eventually I would get that elusive piece. Then the Dark Below was released and Crotas End. I have to admit I was one of the people who enjoyed it right from the start. Again we didn't beat him the first time but we did and like the Vault we repeatedly ran it for the loot. Prison of Elders again I lapped it up, it was different and although I was initially disappointed there was no raid included Skolas was (if not at first with the burns lol) almost as challenging. I loved year 1. It never felt like a grind trying to get the loot. And here we come to the sad farewell. The much anticipated release of the huge DLC The Taken King. It was magnificent. At first. I liked the changes to light and levelling, the new way Bungie included the story into cut scenes. It was quite amazing. Until you were a month or so in and had beaten the raid and realised not only did you have to fight RNG for that elusive piece of armour you had to fight RNG for light that dropped anywhere between 300 and 320. It was painful. Not only that it suddenly dawned on you that the beloved content from year 1 was practically irrelevant apart from a nostalgic run. You could go on patrol and get green items that were higher light. Even new players had no reason with the introduction of an item that boosted you straight to 25. So we now come to the point where my exit nears. Events......  I'm retired, an old man by most Destiny players standards. Do I want to collect candy to buy masks? No not really. My kids grew out of trick or treating 10 years ago lol Was I remotely interested in racing a sparrow? No not really. Do I want a Valentines day experience? No Not really my wife would rather watch soap operas than play video games (she despairs at my video game obsession) These events might be fun for Bungies younger audience but for (lol) grown ups like myself, I just want to shoot things in the unique way Bungie hooked me in year 1. Now I probably could have ignored the events and just played the content I enjoy the raids and strikes and the odd match in the crucible and waited patiently for the next DLC but then a popular gaming website released some news that this new "Events" model was here to stay, no new DLC would be released in year 2. Well with Bungie shutting up shop for neatly two months over Christmas it's now almost 6 months and no announcements about new content for the guardians who prefer PvE. Oh PvP up to our eyeballs but nothing else. Well here is the goodbye. Thank you Bungie for the awesome journey my time here has been brilliant and I think the hours I have put in show that. But it's time for us to part ways. You have lost sight of what made Destiny special and unique. I don't have any bad feelings just a little sadness. So farewell Destiny and farewell my fellow Guardians the ones I've played with and the ones I might have. I hope you have fun. NIEMININ OUT. TL:DR I love Destiny but Bungie have lost sight of what they do best. So Goodbye and good luck. Edit 1: Thank you for the many varied comments. There is no right or wrong in this, it was just an attempt to put in words how I feel about a video game. Anyhow thanks. Edit 2: A common question seems to be "Why if you are quitting do you reply to people?" The simple and honest answer is out of courtesy. If someone takes the time to reply be it positive or negative the least I can do is offer them a response. Edit 3: I've just unsubscribed from the forum so will no longer receive updates. Thank you to all who posted and all who post after.

  • Felt the same way 2 months into TTK, Bunglevision have lost what spark they had. Sad really I am one of the people with the disposable income to follow them through to year 10. I have no faith they can get through y2 now.

  • At times I question myself "why am I still playing this game?", I have been playing less and less and only checking the forums and getting on when an event takes place or when xur arrives. but all I really do while playing is doing a couple of patrol missions, waving to people and other similar activities, then I get off to either go to the gym or somewhere worth my time. I used to play with my little group of friends, and we would plan a day to do activities together. It really is nostalgic when you begin to remember killing atheon and crota for the first time, getting your gjallarhorn and screaming as if you have just won the lottery. Its kind of similar to thinking back of a time when you were a child. I wish it was still like that but we all have to move on to something better at one point or another.

  • I took a 4 month break recently and I'm actually happy I picked it back up again. Crimson doubles actually was pretty fun, that's what got me going again. Since then I've done a nightfall and a raid and FINALLY decided to go find all the ghosts to boost my grimoire up some. There's still a few things I want to do before I leave it behind again. I think maybe once you get some time away, you might feel the same way. I too am an adult (31) and yes, some of the aspects of the game are very kiddie (the candy, the dances, etc) but don't rule a comeback out!

  • Wasn't a grind year one? I have over 60 Crotas end completions trying to get swordbreaker and I still don't have it.

    • My first VOG experience, and probably a lot of other peoples on here too, was definitely one of the best gaming moments of my life. I'll never forget how much fun it was.

We are all in the same boat. 50+ hours in crimson double with ramdom, no 320 ghost. Yup I'm still here. It's a game you win some defeated even more. Most days I'm have fun until some dumbassss start teabaging or lag switching. Deej said more content is coming, so hang in there. If you need someone to team up. I would battle with you together side by side. Bungie is trying, gave them a chance, maybe something better is coming!

    • You people are so fking dramatic. You know what happens with mmo players after they are done farming the current content and are waiting for the next expack? They take a break. We don't need a fking farewell letter. Games like this are a grind. Go take a breather and we will see you when the next raid drops.

      • Reading this reminded me of how I felt watching old Hawkmoon gameplay. People will shout from the mountain tops that the Thorn/TLW meta was the worst but looking back and comparing to what we have now...that meta was way more fun! As I was watching this Hawkmoon video I was taken aback by the fact that I actually started to get a little emotional. Like I didn't realize that that could even be possible. That gun was so much fun to use and I can't think of a single gun in the current meta that even comes close. I was sad because I'll never get to experience that feeling again, at least not with the way Bungie is handling their balancing currently. Hawkmoon was my baby and there isn't a single gun in year two that I can describe as the same. The Chaperone came close. Very close. It was a gun that definitely was a bit OP but it never felt like it because it had to be used in a very specific way and people were turned off by it just due to it not being like a regular shotgun. Before it could get to the "baby" status like the Hawkmoon, what happened? They nerfed it, once again taking away a lot of enjoyment I once had in PVP. It's still useable, but so is the Hawkmoon. They just both aren't very special anymore. And that's the problem. All these battle cries for nerfs and buffs has forced Bungie to make it so nothing feels special anymore. Not just in the way guns act but in the way the loot system works (that's an entirely different discussion, though). I'd rather have a meta with 5 overpowered guns that are a blast to use than a bunch of weapons that are just acceptable at best. Thinking about this makes it hard for me to really blame Bungie because looking at it in this way makes one realize how difficult weapon balancing is. Some people want special guns that outshine others because that's what they enjoy most, others would prefer that all guns are on the same level playing field. Finding the balance (pun totally intended) between the two is something that I'd never be able to do so I'm a little more forgiving of Bungie at least for having a difficult time with this. I'm not mad at them, just sad that they can't seem to figure it out.
