no they dont need to do that. You can donate, ammo, materials like wormspore and others, motes of light, etc. there are so many things to donate you can rank it faster than before.
If any id like rewards to be better as your light/rank goes up.

It costs a crazy amount to level up in this method. It's quicker to grind the required amount of strikes than grind for the materials needed to level up

it does i did it and got my exotic and ships from New Monarchy, plus i have been playing two months tops (after 9+ months of hiatus). I know it's doable by making an effort. Then again i agree, heroic strikes and nightfall should give more reputation.

What? New players have to donate very hefty amounts of materials which offer little rep and is far too expensive to rank up at a rate faster than every 2 weeks.

i got TTK for around 2 months now, while i played vanilla a couple months last year, i returned empty handed and i managed to get my rank and related factions quests. So you can consider me a new player, sort of. It is doable. I donated every single mote of light i got, sometimes armor or weapon parts (no, im not swiming in them), sometimes did heavy and special ammo if i had the glimmer for it. Now take in mind, i REALLY wanted my Comitatus and didnt stopped until i got it :) But that's just me, not saying the way is now is perfect, Nightfall and even patrols should give more reputation, is absurd the blight patrols give that ridiculous amount of reputation and glimmer
