One thing that baffles me is that there is a certain faction of the community that actively defends the prevalence of RNG in the game. A prime example would be the Reforge mechanic from House of Wolves. It helped reduce RNG, at least in a sense, by letting players buy rerolls. Lots of players hated that system because it let players pick the rolls they wanted on their weapons, so players naturally gravitated to certain builds. I've seen other players comment on the loot system, worried that some proposed change would make it too easy to get what one wanted, so that people wouldn't have to grind as long and would run out of white whales to chase. Personally, I think the reliance on RNG deprives the players of their sense of agency in the game world. In lieu of random reforging, I'd love to see a proper crafting system enacted. I'd also love to see player trading and some type of loot distribution system for the raids. But I doubt any of that would actually be considered for inclusion because too much of the game is deliberately structured around slot machine mechanics and too many of the people who get lucky loot drops are prepared to defend those mechanics to preserve the advantage they've gained over other players.

  • There will always be pros & cons when choosing a certain system another, it's definitely a challenge that game designers must learn to overcome and balance. People will definitely move on once they satisfied their goals in the game and get the gear they desired and the challenges...but at the same time, adding more needless grind and friction to keep people playing as much as possible may cause people to leave anyways due to the frustration of such unneeded obstacles. Wouldn't BUNGIE want player's to leave satisfied so that upon the next content drop players would be excited for the next content drop? I mean, this isn't subscription based service BUNGIE has.

  • Hey, friend, you're preaching to the choir there. On the most recent Crucible Radio podcast from Planet Destiny they're interviewing two of the guys responsible for balancing the game, and one of them mentions an idea that somehow (in a far distant update) they would like to have players commit more to a specific loadout. This is something that some of the sweatier members of the community have also endorsed as a way to make game modes like Trials more competitive. It would be interesting to see that implemented by having weapon perks tied to a crafting system that the player would be required to invest in. I'd like to think that's a compromise that could build enough support for increased player agency to overcome the naysayers.

  • Hopefully I don't come off as too preachy then. Hahahaha. But yes, I agree, some sort of crafting system should be implemented into Destiny to allow players feel more connected and invested into their gear and load outs. Then again...I'm not sure the heads of BUNGIE want us to be invested in our gear. All their recent choices seem to say otherwise.

  • Preach on, Brother! Hallelujah! Gear progression is one of the things I think will be interesting going forward. My suspicion is that they are looking to move forward in annual cycles, so we won't be forced to leave stuff behind again until next September, but who really knows? Either way, having to leave behind old gear would be less painful if it didn't reset the daunting grind it takes to require gear with perks that suite a specific playstyle.

One can only hope they turn around and that they are taking feedback at all. Many people may think no, and they may be right but if BUNGIE has truly become RNG oriented, then maybe their RNG mindsets will land in favor of such things.
