Star Wars Discussion [SPOILERS]

So I just saw Force Awakens, and I couldn't help but feel like it echoed so much of A New Hope. It was a great movie, I loved it. Did anyone else just feel like it may have been too similar?

    • Something I may have missed. The opening text said leia sent that Poe guy to jaaku to meet an old friend with info about luke. Are we supposed to know who that old guy was?

      • Only a couple of things stood out that irked me a lil. 1) the sound many things sounded the same yet weaker? Tie's no longer 'Scream' but have a quieter version of the same sound. 2) lukes lightsaber while it had a familiar 'thum' sound to it it defiantly sounded different. 3) maybe I'm missing filler info here but I have no idea why the New Republic has all its ships stationed around a its core worlds or why a faction that won the war has a resistance group? I mean surely if the First Order has been around that long the Republics fleet should have either dealt with them or been enough to keep them at bay so why is their a separate group of freedom fighters fighting an enemy that isn't strong enough to go Ship to Ship against the Republic? 4) while The Star killer base was a cool idea it wasn't original nor do I understand how after its destruction all the solar energy it absorbs forms back into a perfectly fine sun.

The acting was fantastic though and I like how they twisted things in the trailers they show Finn holding the lightsaber leading many to think he's going to be a Jedi yet it turned out to be Rey. While some disliked it I felt Han's death was done very well and wasn't cheap at all anyone that followed SW's even a lil will know that Harrison Ford has wanted to kill of his character since ESB and he finally did in a way that didn't feel cheap and tied in nicely with the story. (With Ben being his soon it was pretty obvious Han was gunna die). I do think Skywalker not being in the film until the end was a bit cheap but seeing as it's the first film there's plenty of things they can flesh out etc. Some seem to think the film breaks Canon/lore which I find odd seeing as basically all canon (after ROTJ) is now obsolete and has no place within the Universe giving them more leeway with what can and can't be done. The force seemed to be accurately portrayed in the OT and PT it always came across as a bit underwhelming especially if you have seen the 3 short CGI trailers for SWOTR (specifically the one on alderaan with the clone troopers now that's how the force should work!)

                • Scene that really made me laugh was probably when Kylo was having his little tantrum after losing Rey and the two stormtroopers just stopped in their tracks and went back the other way

                  • Kylo Ren was such a bitch. His entire character was so whiny. Like, damn, even Ventress wasn't that pathetic.

                  • My only minor complaint was the score, particularly during action sequences. By no means was it bad, but it just wasn't particularly epic when I feel like it should've been. That's one thing the prequel trilogy did get right - the music during battle sequences was fucking insane. However, I feel like JJ did well using the opposite technique, because the absolutely heart stopping silence made me really uneasy at points, like when Han confronts Kylo Ren, or when Finn and Kylo are fighting in the forest. Also Poe Dameron reeks of likability. Easily my favourite new character. Loved the film! As did my friends. And my dad. And my sister. And everyone I've spoke to.

                    • As a whole, it felt like an homage to the original trilogy. I think JJ was too scared to differ from the source material that the fanbase loved, and take risks like the prequels did. It was cool, but it seemed stale. "Ooh you know how in the OT they blew up a giant, planet destroying machine, TWICE? Well let's DO IT AGAIN! Oh you know how we surprised you in the OT with the villain bring related to one of the main characters, and that the Villain was a good Jedi, turned dark? Well let's DO IT AGAIN! Remember destroying the shield generator on the planet below to let the fighters attack the planet - destroying machine? DO IT AGAIN! Remember Ford, Hamil, and Fisher? Well they're back AGAIN! (Carrie, you haven't aged well, dear). As a standalone movie, it was great! But it felt like a Star Wars tribute movie. The things listed above, along with the new directing from JJ, made it feel off to me.

Yeah. It did use a lot of the plot devices from a New Hope but mixed it with the drama of Empire. If that makes sense. But to me this one is the second best Star Wars hands down.
Also, do you think Phasma is dead?
• I think he played it safe, almost every scene was a throw back to the original trilogy. But he played it safe very very well. I think for the next films he will will pretty much have no choice but to make it more original. It was easily the funniest one too.

                                • I really liked it. At first, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver didn't seem like they fitted their roles too well, but they grow on you as the movie goes on. My only real complaint is how the Republic was introduced... At the exact same time it was destroyed. The planet destruction had no real emotional weight behind it, unlike Alderaan, which was Leia's home planet. All in all, though, it was one of the best movies I've seen, and it took the best parts of both the prequels and the OT. For example, seeing the Stormtroopers and knowing each one is a real person, not a computer graphic, really adds something. While CGI was also used to great effect. The lightsaber duels were especially good- they weren't as slow and monotonous as the OT fights but weren't over the top like the prequels (Mustafar).

                                  • I think they did a wonderful job, I honestly couldn't be more pleased. The essence of the original trilogy that they brought to this film was quite nostalgic and I enjoyed every second of it.
