After rereading the post, I get the joke, I'm sure if it were said out loud it would have been much better, unfortunately reading leaves the tone of voice completely up to the reader, a sad flaw to some written jokes

No, he clearly read and understood your post. The issue is you, either, did not read all of his post or did not understand it. He is saying your boss/ ex boss would say the first sentence.
