Defender needs to have a personality quirk like he goes berserk when someone messes with his friends or something like that. Just imagine it: the nicest guy at school suddenly goes into rage mode, beating someone senseless when they punch his friend. Kind of like the hulk's transformation, from a regular guy to a giant green rage machine.
