Guide : How salvage scoring actually works and how to win at salvage - please read!

TLDR : You get the most points for deploying a probe and salvaging the relic as a team. NEVER deploy a probe by yourself unless you are just a few points away from winning/losing the game. By attempting a capture, you are essentially "betting" that your team can hold the point for 45 seconds. If this seems unlikely, let one player on the other team get the capture, then take the zone back from them. Avoid letting multiple enemy players deploy a probe together whenever possible. ------------- Score system explanation: - Deploying a probe nets your team 100 points per teammate deploying (= 300 if everyone deploys together, 100 if you deploy alone) - Sucessfully completing a capture is worth 200 points per teammate in the game (= 600 in most cases) - Dismantling a probe gets you 150 points per teammate in the game (= 450 in most cases) - So if you deploy a probe by yourself, then the other team kills you and dismantles it, you got 100 points but they got 450 plus the points from killing you. Always deploy the probe with your teammates (if youre going to deploy it at all). Relics on the edge of the map are usually easier to defend than relics in the middle of the map which have mutliple flanking lanes. Additional advantages of deploying relics on the edge of the map: enemies that respawn will usually have to run farther to get back to you to engage in another fight after respawning. If the relic is in the middle, they will usually be able to get back more quickly to try again. Always rez your teamates before captures. If you are by yourself, don't deploy a relic just because no one else is there. Maybe even try to kill 2 enemies and let the third one cap for an easy dismantle. Either way, just use the scoring information above to make better judgments when it comes to Salvage. Heavy ammo is very important. As a general rule, pay attention to when heavy is going to spawn and grab the heavy before attempting to capture a zone. Having 3 teamates with heavy will let you either make a capture easily or get an easy dismantle. Salvage is very fun when you play with a team that understands how scoring works. The problem is, almost nobody understands how salvage scoring works and people make bad decisions as a result. Get a team, explain this to them, then try it. You'll kick everyone's ass in many cases simply by understanding the rules better than them because you will make better decisions with a better understanding of how score works. If I had one thing to say about the scoring, I think dismantling should be rewarded less. Maybe 100 points per character in the game for dismantling a probe instead of 150. This would encourage more attempts to capture the relic no matter what and less of letting one person on the other team get the probe then trying to dismantle it yourself. Do you guys think the salvage scoring system should be changed? Do you have any other tips for salvage?

I understood the scoring before you posted and I really hate that cheesy strategy. I do try to play smart but the matches are way more fun when both teams are making honest efforts to get as many deploys and salvages as possible. I think they should increase points for deploying/salvaging and/or decrease points for dismantling.

    • Good and thorough post - thanks a lot for providing the community with this useful piece of information! You may want to add that taking a relic close to when heavy ammo spawns is a bad idea, too - your probe will either get dismantled or your team will end up with no heavy at all and get stomped afterwards. Also pay attention whether your enemies have their Super charged or if they're likely to be close to having it. One Super can wipe your team and result in the dismantling of your probe. What's more is that the enemies know more or less where you are if you deploy probes - that makes it easier to attack and overwhelm you (with grenades as strong helpers, for instance). Hence, I usually don't capture relics at all. I prefer to dismantle them. Unless we're up against a lot worse opponents, that is - defending against them is rather easy. I remember one match I recently played with a friend - thus we had one random blueberry with us. It was on Timekeeper. Our random deployed 6 probes in total - we lost all of them as the map is so tiny and even if you kill the first wave of attackers, they'll get a second or even third chance of assault. Our random also deployed when he was on his own - so that wasn't helpful at all. It was a very close game, but we still managed to win, fortunately. Anyways, I think you can try to deploy once or twice. If it doesn't work out and if you're not armed with heavy weapons or Supers, I wouldn't recommend trying to salvage a relic. Cheers mate, keep up the good posts!

        • I also agree with you that people should get less points for a dismantle! Considering it take 10-15 seconds to deploy a probe, but like 2 seconds to shut it down!

        • How to win at salvage. It's simple. Use a heavy LMG that provide you with a shit load of ammo and reloads on its own. Deploy a probe and watch the flies come rushing in. Pick them off one at a time over and over, and over and over again until it ends.

I think that when you deploy they should change it to where you get a certain number of points based on the time you hold the relic. Like in rift, if you carry the spark, you still get some points awarded by how close you come to the enemy rift. I think in salvage you should get some points every 15 seconds of defending. This way there is more incentive to capture instead of letting the other team cap and just dismantle.

        • Also worth mentioning that even if it means losing a probe/disable, if Heavy is about to pop Heavy ALWAYS TAKES PRIORITY. This is true for any and every mode where heavy can spawn and I swear too many n00bs just don't get it. It's far more important to secure the Heavy than trying to get a few points because if you let the other team get it - or worse both - then you're doubly screwed. Also don't forget to revive any dead teammates before ripping it unless the enemy is nearby and/or you are about to die, then just take it and do your best to survive rather than let them have it.

        • Also after you deploy, dont just sit on the objective back away and find a good line of sight to cover it. The enemy will alway ADS towards the relic looking for you!

            • Salvage is absolutely my favorite game-type. It was even better when Inferno Salvage was the weekly. But I normally just play classic 3v3, as I like 3v3 in general better than 6v6 or 2v2.

              • As a sweaty player that plays a ton of salvage competitively, its mostly just a game of skirmish up to 7500. When people know what they're doing, they very rarely capture it just because it benefits the other team more 99% of the time.

I usually let the enemy take the probe then dismantle it for points. Easier than actually capping it
