The button is definitely just for the door. I've seen other rooms with mag lock doors as the only way in or out with the same thing.

The buttons are only in rooms if the mag lock door is the only way in. It's a fail safe if the game glitches and the door closes while you're in there. Usually the door will open and close when you press it, but this one doesn't.
