Bungie, You Might've Gone Too Far This Time

In Year 1, we as a player base have put up with a lot. You took away the loot cave, the one thing the community created. Something that created friendships, created rivals, and brought a lot of people on hoping for that one golden egg. You took it away, and we all said "Well I'm angry, but you actually made purples drop purples now. They're rarer than they were, but at least I get good stuff now." You gave us the raid, gave us the hardest gun to achieve and brought it to it's knees just as quick. We all said "Yeah, a 50 mag size and higher time to kill than even auto rifles was a bit overboard. It was a super hard gun to get, but it does need toned down" We eventually said the same to auto rifles, but you kept nerfing them until they were trash. Weapons have unfortunately always been this way, but we've rolled with it because diversity. Except the hand cannon meta for 6 months. That was utter crap, and you know it. Shotguns are going the way of the auto rifle right now, and it's quite sad. We (Well, not we here, because I had no idea you could do this until after they patched it) used in game mechanics that make enemies back away from grenades to push off raid bosses. We said "That's fair, it was cheap and made the whole thing not seem as worth it". We then received The Dark Below, the most lackluster DLC for a game I've seen. We all said "Well it's out fault for buying the season pass. We should have waited". Then House of Wolves came out. We had no raid, the Prison of Elders and Trials of Osiris broke apart our teams we'd formed bonds with because we needed the best members because it was limited to 3 people. We said "I'm bitter about it, but they never promised a raid, so I guess it's fine" Then we hear about TTK. "Hey, people who haven't played yet! You can get everything that our 'loyal' customers have bought for a grand total of$140, for just $60 (Because our game had so many hostile reactions that the market value plummeted far more than any other game in a year)! We'll even give you exclusive rewards that those already playing can't get, they'd have to buy everything all over again to do so" We said "That's not fair Bungie. We deserve to get these things too for playing for so long!" And Bungie was like "We done goofed, 'loyal' customers, so here, for a simple $20, you can get some exotics, emotes, and shaders that you'll probably vault anyway." We became divided on this stance of paying for cosmetics that still permeates today. The majority however, whether reluctant or gung-ho, accepted it, and it stayed in. Then you decide to charge more money for stuff, even making the two things everyone wanted expensive enough people would have to spend extra money for them. We cried wolf, but were silenced by those saying "It's cosmetic. It isn't hurting the game, you don't have to get it, and it's not moving past cosmetics" Again, the majority has accepted it, maybe even spent some money, and moved on. And now, you do refer a friend. The majority of us have already gotten our friends to get this game long ago. We have formed out groups, and don't need more people in because we already have more than 6 we talk with on a regular basis. You make it so we can't get this stuff without paying for a second account to have PSN/Gold so we can get this stuff. But wait! For three easy payments of $49.95, they can be yours today! I assume this is what will happen within a few weeks. I had actually planned to make this comical using that part, but this just seemed like such a huge scam for more money I couldn't bring myself to do it. Bungie, you're treading on thin ice here with many people. Think wisely about how you want to play this out. And for the love of God, don't let Luke Smith or Deej say anything about this stuff. Both have been bad PR for a bit now, and you can't afford too much more. I don't want to quit this game, Bungie, but you're making it very hard to want to keep going with this middle finger you keep giving to existing players and free candy to the new ones. Eventually, you will run out of new players and by then the old ones will have probably left and won't be coming back. TLDR; Don't comment if you didn't read the whole thing. Edit: Holy butternuts, I've never had this many replies or upvotes before. I haven't had a chance to read/reply to everyone, and doubt I will, but for those who commented, good or bad, thank you for your input. Edit 2: Broke 1000 replies. Thank you all, both those who agree and those who don't. It's good to have the differing opinions, that's what makes us unique. I've been on a plane all day with no internet, so I haven't gotten to read everything from people, but I will try to go through and read all the posts, maybe make a comment or two.

  • You forgot the part where they nerfed hopscotch pilgrim a super rare trophy weapon that people invested days into getting. Not to mention the materials spent on rolling that perfect roll.

  • What type of game is Destiny? They say it's not an MMO, just has some MMO similarities. Kinda an RPG, but not a true RPG. Its definitely an FPS, except when you're running a sword or using a microtransaction emote. The reason I ask is because I need to know what genre of game not to buy in the future. Last year Destiny seemed like the game I would play till I died. But I was fooled into wasting a butt load of time. I just don't want to make the same mistake again.

  • Good post some very relevant comments made, as for the future of this IP that really depends on what it is we as players are really looking for. I can see why the refer a friend thing is being done, as the life of the Xbox360 is reaching the end, support is slowly being lowered and if I read correctly the Xbox360 servers are to be shut down by 2017 [maybe sooner] I don't own a PS3 so I don't know when that also will no longer support a gaming fan base on it. so unless your looking to spend even more money (forget about emotes, you'll need a new console) time to start looking for something else to do.. I can't see Destiny 2 being the "hope" we or should I really say in the singular what I'm hoping for, far too many bad habits have been allowed to become commonplace practice. The game I hoped Destiny was or should have been was a cross between - No Mans Sky, Mass Effect & CoD. Some would love to blame the limitations of the game on hardware, but the real limitation came from greed.

  • Very well worded post, doubt even the bungie fanboys could argue.I used to love this game but with the constant decline in content that each DLC offers i've all but given up on it. I still think Bungie could save it if they would only listen to the community more, but sadly they dont seem interested. I truly don't want this game to die but if Bungie doesn''t pull something seriously amazing out of their butt then I don't think there is enough life support in the world to keep it breathing.

  • Bump! A very well thought out post. I will not recommend this game to anyone I know. I use to love this game, I've played since beta but bungie has shit on this community over and over again and won't stop. There is so many ways they could improve the game as it stands now but they won't because they don't listen to the community. They read (maybe) a few nerf requests posts and so that's what we get. Instead of fixing the real problems like the loot system, they nerf it so we have to play longer which is artificially inflating their numbers. I'm waiting for Black Friday to see if fallout 4 goes on sale and getting it. Hell even if it doesn't go on sale, I'm getting it. 1000 times the content destiny has and it's made by a developer that actual cares about its product and the community that plays it.

So true, Bungie just keeps hanging themselves with that rope and loose more players every day. Sadly I've got others to play Destiny but will never do so again the way Bungie screws over their customers. I've learned my lesson.

      • I normally steer clear of "hate" posts, but this was pleasantly surprising. Well said and well thought out. As an Alpha player (for which there isn't even an emblem for as far as I know), I really wish there were something to show some sort of appreciation. A shader or an emblem here and there just to say "thanks guys, we wouldn't be here without you."

It still baffles me how Bungie went from being one of the most beloved developers ever to Bungievision. Their reputation is ruined, but they just don't care.

                • BUY FALLOUT 4! More content than all of Destiny up to this point. True character builds and customization! Guaranteed drops from killing legendary enemies! True open world environment! BUY IT TODAY! On topic: Bungie is showing us that they care about the money here. They're using the RAF to make us do their dirty work for them by having us push their game on our friends and family. It's cheaper for them to throw a skin on some items than to invest into more marketing for the game. I wouldn't even be mad if they said something like "New Players Who Play By Jan. 7, 2015 will be rewarded with XYZ...". Something stupid like a shader or even a few legendary engrams in the postmaster.

                • A well thought out post for sure. Normally I don't dive down these sorts of posts as they speak for themselves and resonate highly with people, but I'll make some thoughts known...
You took away the loot cave, the one thing the community created.
Never bothered with the loot cave. This game, Destiny, is one of my countless game history in MMO's and FPS. That cave? Taught people to not get used to game mechanics which would have served them faithfully and I contribute that cave (all three to be exact) to the lack of reflexes needed when #Forever29 was going around. A game is meant to have its mechanics learned so your reflexes for endgame content is sufficient to learn quickly on the fly. I have yet to meet a Destiny player who does MMO raids regularly in other games or understand why Trials is so competitive and based on line of sight opportunities with adequate kill time guns and teamwork. Those who get to the lighthouse by being carried? They deserve to get there because people don't want to learn those mechanics. The basic ramifications I've ever found is in the player. In Star Wars, Rift, Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, WoW, ect.. It's fine you THINK that cave was created by the community and your experience was lessened because of that. It was a bug and your experience was not. It gave you rewards which is fine, but the sacrifice of that only means you lose the capabilities you could have had by simply patrolling and getting used to the high level enemies for the raids and/or multiplayer. *shrugs* It's whatever experience you choose, but do not make the time accurate mistake of saying you didn't crutch yourself. You did with every bullet you let fly.
You gave us the raid, gave us the hardest gun to achieve and brought it to it's knees just as quick.
When WoC first came out in comparison to fatebringer... I didn't have it. It took me a while to get it to drop, but when I did? I made this post. Again, I've had far too much experience not to overlook a gun others dislike and say, "I can make that gun work where others can't." That's my competitive edge. And when I made WoC work better then Fatebringer? Realizing that those who liked Fatebringer were used to killing adds who were not in endgame content? I knew the crutch was back. With an expansion DLC. Please note that is not a problem... what is a problem... is how others are asking Bungie to modify guns in ways they find fun and exciting... but I know will not work in Destiny. It's a game built on the same mechanics of other FPS: Guns, grenades, and melee. So no. Fatebringer was NEVER a good gun to have outside of VoG. When CE dropped? WoC was the gun to have for those who ventured into crucible and pulled a 3sk kill shot. Firefly? GREAT perk to have, but good luck closing off the problems which would occur when you came up against a Hive major. Fatebringer then failed miserably and without recourse. Introduce HoW and etheric light. I purposely threw up Fatebringer due to primary anti-fallen captain potential. It served great there, but I also found other problems... namely the range in the Fallen portion of PoE. This? Trying to take down a shielded major? Fatebringer might as well be back in VoG trying to damage minotaurs. I eventually put up WoC and found the same results except it was a void. That hand cannon was not the good gun to have. Vex Mytho was due to the mid range capability on all endgame content. But that was just my experience. I don't care for otherwise stories as I'm only putting down how you are supremely inaccurate in my experience with that statement.
We eventually said the same to auto rifles, but you kept nerfing them until they were trash.
Again, my competitive edge made me put Suro's up after all the things I saw happening to auto's. I even put up Shadow Price in normal crucible. Never... ever... had a problem killing for 2.0 and 3.0 matches. PvE? I put the enemy movements down in good kill times with the modified perks. Where the problem areas back then was the fusion rifles. The spread made it too narrowed to a shotgun range. Suddenly a charge time competed against no charge time. I think we all know how that went. Fusion rifles are mostly PvE now without a narrowed concussion perk now.
We (Well, not we here, because I had no idea you could do this until after they patched it) used in game mechanics that make enemies back away from grenades to push off raid bosses.
Bugs like that were fun. I had more fun making him not teleport with a full set of 30's back then though for the chest rewards. Which is what you said.
We then received The Dark Below, the most lackluster DLC for a game I've seen.
For all the bad talk towards TDB, people complained about PoE not being a raid. Then I saw compliments about how to beat CE. I saw raid groups voluntarily say, "Let's not cheese the bridge" and suddenly the experience meant something. Again: The game is not just about the environments you are in. If you didn't want to challenge yourself? Good on you. Simpler is a lot of times more fun... this is a video game. Make it more competitive with friends and I don't think you'll ever be disappointed when you look back at it. Sucks in the moment? Probably not the right group you were running with. I've laughed in all endgame content with the right group because jokes are more often then not. That is what Destiny is about and if that hasn't happened to you enough times? You need to get a better group. Competitiveness is not just wanting to win or succeed. It's also about making sure you can enjoy the company you are with.
Then we hear about TTK. "Hey, people who haven't played yet! You can get everything that our 'loyal' customers have bought for a grand total of$140
' First access, first weapon experience, first exposure, and first times clan based activities highlighted participation in the achievements and content. You want to complain about price? Go learn market economics. This is nothing compared to how technology companies operate in Silicon Valley. The tiniest modification to the iPhone? Oh, we need to create a charge for an arm and a leg on the next. Where are we at now? iPhone 6s is $749 for 64GB down to $100 models which are no where near the 6s. Apple stock isn't going down last I checked and as a matter? It's the highest it's ever been. It's not about being right or wrong. The world economics model takes into factor at least 50 other countries economies generated by simply paying for a service the world somehow justifies in those countries. In the U.S.? We have over hundreds of trillions of dollars in other countries capital investments JUST through common wealth services given to other countries... the same is true in France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, Romania, Switzerland, ect.. It's all tied to the same things: EVERYTHING YOU DO COSTS SOMETHING. EVERRRRYYYYYTTTHHHHHHHIIIIINNNNNGGGGGG. So no. You had premiers NO ONE ELSE was given. We all paid a price. We all got access to content. Go tell that to those who paid for MCC collection and didn't get a multiplayer which didn't crash on them. I really like your opinions on this, but if you think this is bad... perhaps you should stay away from EVE online or monthly subscription games...

                  • I've played since crota days. I'm 313 light now and the game is boring. I play weekly nightfall and even the weekly crucible bounties and get nothing good I can use from either. I have done normal and hard raid but it just isn't a fun raid to me and after a few times running it I just havnt gone back. This is mainly due to the last few times I ran it I got bouldering shards and 1-2 drops... I play crucible a ton but at this point it has become snipe fest 2015 and is getting boring Trials can be fun but the sniping is just getting ridiculous All in all I think it's time for me to move on. Not sure what game is next but I think destiny has worn out its welcome for me. Add in the fact that they will undoubtedly come out with an expansion soon requiring another $40 and I won't be buying that
