All I know is that there needs to be a serious re-evaluation of the creative/directorial lead at 343. Halo 5 might also be a victim of the Mattrick era too. A big problem is that there are people that believe Halo is a cinematic universe on par with Star Wars that can have Xbox TV shows, comic books, novels, and anime crap. The problem is 1) Halo's not -blam!-ing Star Wars 2) The story has never been good enough to sustain that and 3) Halo 4 and Halo 5 were built around players having digested all the EU rather than (properly) using the EU as an extension outside of the games. For those of us that played Halo in 2001 there has been a noticeable crash in the quality of the games. We've gone from "Game of the Generation" contenders to "GOTY" contenders to games that aren't coming close to being even considered as one of the best releases of the year. Part of it is simply that nothing can last forever. Microsoft probably accelerated the process by releasing too many Halo games too quickly. Times change. You can only go to the same well so many times. I think what's most noticing is that the games aren't even as polarizing as they use to be. With Reach and Halo 3 you'd get God knows how many threads arguing how they aren't as good as the last game. People were passionate about Halo. Now they're not even making those posts. People just don't care like they used to.

  • *puts on an antic disposition* Halo's story has always been alternate-media worthy. That's why there's a whole bunch of novels, comic books, short films/web series, etc.

  • And that stuff is all fine. The problem is when you go from great games driving EU media to EU media driving middling games.

  • *puts on an antic disposition* Personally I think/hope that Halo has reached a sort of symbiosis with its extended universe. At the start obviously were just the game(s) followed by EU stuff cause it was so good. Then more games came out still only fueling more EU. Now some games have come out revealing major parts of the EU to those who never read them in the first place, and a nice little reminder to those who have. Anyway my point is that hopefully more games about the EU will also feed more EU content, which goes on in a cycle.
Of course I'm not saying that they should continue Halo forever, but at least as long as they are making games I think it should be like this.
Honestly I'm sure many of us would love the idea of playing in past settings previously only included in the EU. Imagine playing as the Chief with his fireteam blowing up the covenant docking station before it could go to earth? (First Strike)

  • Nostalgia goggles are blinding you. Halo was never, ever considered even close to being game of the generation--in fact as I recall that title went to half-life, although an argument could be made for legend of Zelda ocarina of time. Nor has it ever won game of the year across the board, unless the year it released happened to lack RPG's. The only thing Halo has always done well factually, is sell like crazy. The actual quality of the games has always been hit or miss, with the first game probably being the tightest. Halo two was a glitch ridden mess that had an unfinished campaign, and a near handholding multiplayer. Halo three's campaign was an embarrassment, and the multiplayer became more random with increased bullet spread and slower movement speed, resulting in a sluggish, weak feeling game. We all know how to reach and 4 -blam!-ed everything up as well, but 4 at least had a good story, with some legitimate intelligence behind it. 5 is dubious certainly, but halo's success was always heavily due to hype. There's nothing particularly special about the quality of the games themselves, at least not what has changed. Some do some things better than others and others do other things better than some. And if you truly think that the games aren't as divisive as ever, you either aren't on the Internet enough or you're being willfully ignorant. And the story is going as strong as ever, more so now that we have a studio that takes it seriously, even if some of their writers aren't exactly the best. To answer the OP's question, they should demote Brian Reed. He's got good ideas, but he's not equipped to be the lead writer of a large project like this.

  • You're being too anal about a specific of what I said in addition to mixing up console generations. Halo CE and Halo 2 were among the cream of the crop to come out of the Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, and I suppose Dreamcast generation. That people would by and large consider those games generation defining titles is very telling about the quality of those games. Now don't go replying to this with some post about Half-Life 2 or Ocarina of Time. The point is these games have gone from easily being among the best few titles of their given release year, to maybe being in that top dozen, to now not even cracking that list.

  • It was legit. Well he may have SLIGHTLY exaggerated. I mean game of the decade was on halo 3s cover.

  • Star Wars one and two sucked also. It's nearly impossible to make a story arc this doesn't jump the shark with one main character over 6 titles without a reboot. I understand why they limited the narrative arc during halo 5 to leave a story there for 6, but they could have added a couple Locke vs chief levels to the campaign. I think the multiplayer is the best ever.

  • Or how about just making it about Locke versus Chief? The idea of having to hunt down and eliminate Master Chief is simple and an instant hook. It's much personal and allows for a more character focused story. Instead you get the plot of countless Halo fanfics from the early 2000's.

I have to disagree with the cinematic universe point. Halo is rich with lore and story but 343 sometimes such at representing it. For example look at what Bungie created for Halo 3's marketing. Quality wise, it beats Nightfall and Foward unto Dawn by far.

  • Bungie didn't make those, Microsoft's marketing department did. They're the same people who made the marketing for halo five. And like with Halo three and even Reach, the marketing had -blam!- all to do with the actual game.

  • That's pretty pathetic then. The live action stuff always looked like fans doing really good cosplay.

Ever watch District 9 (the film is amazing 10/10)? That film was originally going to be a Halo movie. Live action can be nailed perfectly, if done right.

Like you say, nothing lasts forever. Times change, and the gaming landscape is now very different from that of 2001 when halo was first released. It was 14 years ago! 14 years!!!
