The traveler once was with the fallen before the darkness got to them and it abandoned them. Now the fallen are out for revenge and history is repeating itself as the darkness has come for us because of the traveler. But this time the traveler was prepared and created the ghosts so they could get guardians to defend the traveler.

No, Rasputin stopped the Traveller when it was trying to escape. When it got damaged by Rasputin it released the Ghosts as a form of self preservation, not to help humanity, the awoken, or the exo's, but to protect itself from the Darkness.
