When did Rasputin shut down then? Right after these events? It makes sense since if it retaliated against the invading forces after that (those events), it would surely meet its demise. So it shut down so it could be a part of the endgame after the collapse and save us all?

I would say Rasputin does what is necessary to stop the Traveler from fleeing. Knowing it is crippled and must stay to fight, it then calculates that it can not stay and fight the darkness so goes into Hibernation. We awake him and find out by Ghost that he survived the darkness. Can't remember if ghost says he stood up to it (though attacking the Traveler could form the basis of 'standing up' so to speak).
