I first found them on the moon. You can stimulate them by pulling your ghost out and inspecting them, dancing, and searching the area that they can view. It seems like they try to distract you while you do this. You'll hear the music get louder, then your screen will tell you to do patrols, and then a public event will spawn. You can say that this happens anyway, but if you mess with them and then stop, as soon as you stop the music goes quiet. You can also hear them start making loud computer noises. You will not find any of these machines on Mars. The relics I believed I was seeing at first where when it called in a public event to clear the waves, after completing it a huge gold chunk fell out and was laying on the ground. (I was wrong on this). And then I believed them to be items left behind for us to see to point us in the right directions (ie the dead astronauts on the moon). Relics can be defined as items from the past left behind. The directions for the map are for the destination screen for the solar system. Starting at the crashed ship on Venus leads you to Mars, then Earth, and then the Moon last. (Which is due south of Venus and Mars will be empty just like the journal says) If you look through the journal and take Cayde's words that he has underlined and put them together they make a side message telling you another story. I believe that the end goal is to blow up the moon base. I also believed that you could use the hereafter (which he has a picture of) because it highlights targets. I searched every where and couldn't find anything but Cayde clearly says to take cover, fire a sniper, and watch it blow up and that the base in not empty. Cayde does say to come alone and whenever I've tried to bring people with me, they say that they don't hear anything and the public events don't spawn back to back. I believe we are to blow up the moon base to destroy the communications through the universe to handicap Rasputin. I believe the hive are also using its energy to power whatever they're doing. I found it really strange that after I had messed with the little machines in the forgotten shore and then went into Rasputin's warmine, there were 3 ultra nights with different names. They seemed like they were there to protect the warmine. If I can think of anything I may have left out ill add it later. I'm burnt out on trying to figure this out. Been at it for a long time now. This wasn't a troll post. I honestly believed I was at the end but I've hit a wall. And the 13 minute long video was of me messing with the bot and making it call in the public event. They're all over the place on the moon. If you go from the beginning of patrol. There are 2 on the left side going towards the hell mouth. Half buried in a mound. 2 on top of a little hit but the hell mouth. About 10 on top of the little base in the middle right above the hell mouth. Also some in the caves around the hell mouth and a few stacked up on the other side under the cross way. They have little yellow light and antennas. Also look extremely similar to the radio beacons that play the Russian music in the forgotten shore. Check them out when you go there. They're right beside each other. The ones on the moon are white, Venus are green, and Earth are red. Like they're blending in. Venus are in the hallway from the academy library to the crashed ship and also in the the other room beside the ship (Ishtar something?).
