If you read the grimoire dealing with Variks and peope conversing with him and especially now the grimoire with Wolves or Mars story it seems like Variks will eventually be Kell of Kells or at least wishes to be.

It does seem like it. With Mara Sov dead he no longer has anything holding him back, he could claim he killed her (since there are barely any high ranking Awoken to contest) and gain respect with the Fallen Houses. Personally it would be cool to see Variks as Kell of Kells...it would certainly be interesting :)
