Good read. Personally though, I think Variks a coward and was only worried about saving his own skin. He seems very persistent in the survival of House of Judgment. When I read through the Eliksni grimoire, I couldn't help but feel for Skolas over Variks. Their perspectives are very different. For example, Skolas makes it sound like they came looking for the Traveler as their final shot at the survival of their race, and they were denied by the City, therefore becoming aggressive towards them. There is certainly enough Traveler to go around, but Humanity aren't going to give that up. Skolas appears to have regret for the way things went during the Reef wars with the in-fighting and appears to want to repair the Fallen society back to what it was without the divided houses. Of course, he still has plenty of hatred for the City and the Queen, the Fallen have suffered massive losses to them. When you think about it, the Fallen are just trying to survive, and their survival is being hoarded by the City and it's undead army, whom don't die. Variks the traitor on the other hand, well, he likely threw Skolas under the bus because Skolas amputated him.

  • I'm not sure I'd call Variks a coward. Yes he was trying to save his own skin but I'm not sure it was for his benefit, but for House Judgment's. I think he views the Hiuse of Judgment as a necessary part of Eliksni culture, and realizes that unless he find more Fallen willing to take up the mantle, his death spells the end of the House Judgment.

  • You have a point. I'm just trying to offer something a little different to the "Variks is a cowardly scumbag!" theory. It does certainly seem that way however, I won't deny that. I actually understand Variks' actions though...he is the last known member of his house...if he dies then House Judgement is lost forever. I personally like to think they acted like our Vanguard...but that's just me. I do feel for Skolas...he knew he messed up in the Reef Wars and just wanted to unite the Eliksni under one banner. Of course he had to make them submit first. We do seem the villains here don't we? I mean...keeping the Traveler all to ourselves? Kinda horrible...however...I offer a counterpoint. Would we be able to defend ourselves without it? It is the source of our powers and light. It granted us gifts and stood with us in the end...not the Eliksni. We were chosen and they were not. Ultimately it is the Traveler's choice if it wants to leave us...all it has to do is say so to the Speaker. We would end up like the Fallen then, we would have our tech...but nothing else. Would we be the same without our Traveler?

  • I didn't realise there was already a "Variks is a scumbag" following, I thought I was being clever in my analysis :) In answer to your question regarding the Traveler......."We should all pick a side, Little Light, even if it's the wrong side." I actually don't think there is a right or wrong at this point, it's just the surest way to ensure our survival. Hopefully this changes as the game goes on.

  • Hopefully :) I would love to see bungie put more lore in this game. That would be the absolute best! (Also we should get new ghost skins and get to name them. I would name mine A.L.D. (Annoying Little Dinklebot) XD)

  • Haha, sadly it's always gonna be Dinklebot for me. I think we're going to see more. This first game was basically an introduction to a new universe that Bungie want to tell stories and adventures about for another 10 years.
