It's gotta be love. People do outrageous things "in the name of love". Love can lead to rage, jealousy, suspicion, fear. Just about every negative emotion. As a whole it seems humans can't cope with the idea of being alone and will put themselves in bad situations (mental or physical abuse) to avoid having to stand on their own.
