Which religion is more peaceful: Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Jainism or other? Please let's keep it civilised, there's no need to start a volcanic eruption. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My opinion: My vote goes for Jainism with buddhism laying pretty close. Jainism: Jainism is by far one of the most peaceful religions on earth if not the most. Belonging to the Dharmic family of religions, it advocates for and is based upon the core tenets of peace and nonviolence. Their basic tenets are: nonviolence, vegetarianism, respect for nature, compassion, tolerance, karma, and reincarnation to name a few. While you might hear news stories of Islamic or Christian terrorists, a Jain terrorist is virtually unheard of. Buddhism: Again, like I said, Buddhism is also an extremely peaceful religion. Also being a Dharmic religion, it is also the most tolerant and accepting as a recent study indicates that of all the religious groups in America (including atheists), Buddhists rank #1 in supporting gay marriage. I would have probably been up there tied with Jainism if not for particular groups such as Zen Buddhists, who have encouraged the kamikaze bombings or the Buddhists who have committed terrorist attacks in Burma and Thailand. However these incidents are more likely a result of social and political tensions as opposed to being a result of Buddhism alone. Buddhism also teaches of nonviolence and vegetarianism along with many other similarities shared with Jainism. Hinduism: Generally regarded as the mother of all Dharmic religions, Hinduism, at its core, is essentially a peaceful religion. Essential teachings that exist in Buddhism and Jainism also appear in Hinduism such as nonviolence, Karma, Dharma, Reincarnation, religious pluralism, and the unity of all living creatures. It also encourages vegetarianism as even the most smallest of live is seen as sacred. Hinduism also holds that the masculine and feminine are two parts of the same whole and should be seen and treated as equal and indivisible. However, in recent years, interpretations of Hinduism have diverged from its holy and ancient roots and a very small minority of self proclaimed Hindus have formed organizations like the RSS, Abhinav Bharat, and other radical groups which foster intolerance and acts of violence. Yet still, despite these groups, the vast majority of Hindus still remain loyal to the notions of peace and nonviolence. Christianity, Judaism and Islam: All being Abrahamic monotheistic religions, These religions, in their scriptures, have notions of religious exclusivity, which clearly the Dharmic religions do not share. Religious exclusivity in its basic sense, mean that their religions claim ultimate exclusivity to truth - and this can be dangerous at times and will ultimately lead to religious fundamentalism, fanaticism, extremism, and finally terrorism. A majority of religious global conflict in the history of humanity has been initiated by these religions. The scriptures of these religions, while having many beneficial and morally insightful sections, also has many morally unacceptable things such as insisting that animals were made for human entertainment or consumption or that their God would reward them in their afterlives for conducting violence in his name. To be fair, very few go by the literal interpretations of these texts and a vast majority are religious moderates who are mostly benign and peaceful people.

      • None really. The world would be a better place if there was no such thing as religion. The holocaust wouldn't have happened, 9/11 wouldn't have happened, the school shootings wouldn't have happened... The list goes on, religion is the root of evil.

      • The most peaceful is when you refuse to be confined by religion at all. I mean step out of those boxes all together and stand back and leave them all on the shelf

        • Probably Judaism, but true Judaism not influenced by Zionism. The latter has done to the religion what Wahhabism is doing to Islam. And while many Americans due to their support of Israel cannot distinguish between the two, Judaism and Zionism are not the same thing. Judaism is one of the few religions that does not believe that you need to belong to it for salvation, nor does it obsess over the afterlife but focuses more on the present. And due to being stigmatized for a long time in Europe and the Middle East, Jews--assuming they're not influenced by the atrocity known as Zionism--are pretty sympathetic toward other minority groups. Honorable mention would go to Sikhism. Like the Jews, they are used to being severely persecuted and so are pretty sympathetic and tolerant toward others. While they often get a bad rep for the ceremonial knife and are often mistaken for Muslims, it should be noted the knife was for self-defense from the persecution they historically received and Sikhs have suffered under the Islamic yoke just as much as my kind have. I don't believe that Hinduism and Buddhism are as peaceful as New Age westerners on the internet portray them as. The former was responsible for the caste system and has a strong history of persecuting other religions on the Indian subcontinent including Christianity (which precedes the British btw), Buddhism, and the Sikhs. The latter while not as violent as Hinduism still is not perfect. Buddhists have been known to wage holy wars against each other with spiritual leaders of various disagreeing monasteries lending support. Even the 5th Dalai Lama himself once famously instructed: "[Of those in] the band of enemies who have despoiled the duties entrusted to them: Make the male lines like trees that have had their roots cut; Make the female lines like brooks that have dried up in winter; Make the children and grandchildren like eggs smashed against rocks; Make the servants and followers like heaps of grass consumed by fire; Make their dominion like a lamp whose oil has been exhausted; In short, annihilate any traces of them, even their names." Being Russian Orthodox, I am also biased in favor of my own religion. I would say that Eastern Orthodoxy was pretty peaceful up until the Crusades and particularly the Sack of Constantinople in AD 1204, where strong anti-Western tendencies were sown that led to Russia at least adopting an imperialistic outlook/rivalry with the West, and the rest of the Orthodox world absolutely detesting Uniates. In modern times these prejudices have pretty much subsided, although the general skepticism of the West/Cold War mentality still runs strong.

*Wants to keep things peaceful... Proceeds to openly say most terrorists are Christians, Muslims, or Jews.* Well done OP, you are a flame war supporter... Also isn't it just the people that are violent? I've never heard of violent religions except some of the more tribal and occult. Christianity isn't a religion (supposedly) built around violence. It's usually the people or the people's deity that are violent. The way I see it... This is just another way to bash religion because most people are intolerant on these forums.

                    • There are some branches of Jainism that promote not veganism exactly I forget what it's called. Basically they only eat fruit and nuts that have already fallen off trees/bushes etc. I think they may eat meat if it has been killed by something else and left I don't remember. Anyway the reason they do that is because they believe that even picking fruit and things is a form of violence towards the plant which they don't like.

I really don't think any religion is peaceful. In fact, by definition, these are designed to be violent. After all, by committing to a religion, you are committing to its teachings with no evidence whatsoever that these reflect some sort of objective truth, which is why you call these "beliefs". Once you do that, you are bound to defend these unproven "truths" against threats, which can take the form of a person who minds his own business and chooses to eat meat, or a perfectly nice guy who happens to be gay. Because you've committed to the tenets pretty much blindly, to avoid cognitive dissonance, you are almost bound to act against such threats to your beliefs.
