The only exotic weapon I have is Bad Juju. When I first got it, I hated it. Burst fire is far from my favourite thing in shooters, so the fact that I'd been saddled with a pulse rifle of all things as my only exotic set me off to a great start. I equipped it anyway, and hated it exactly as I'd expected. It was weaker than my beloved blue hand cannon despite being exotic, had a tiny magazine, and had those annoying bloody particles that obscured the view down the sights. I started equipping it for bounty experience only, and finally managed to level it up to String of Curses. Finally, I had a gun that I didn't hate quite as much, and did just enough more damage than anything else I had that I couldn't justify not using it. Fast forward a few months and the much-needed buff to the thing, and now, against all odds, I love the thing. I still don't like pulse rifles, but my plucky little unloved Juju has carried me so far it would be hard not to have grown attached. I ascended it today, and now I've gone from doing well in Iron Banner to regularly placing top 2 or 3. I didn't choose Bad Juju, I never wanted it. But I'm glad it's my only exotic because it's a great little gun that won my heart against all odds, and that will forever make it special.
