Opinions on being able to mute people?

While muting the obvious "trolls" can be helpful I feel that this can potentially seperate the community. I can see this as being abused and people muting others for not sharing their same opinions. While people should be able control some aspects of their experience on the website I'm not sure if this should be one of them. Opinions?

  •
I can see this as being abused and people muting others for not sharing their same opinions
That's not abuse. That's a feature. Lots of people aren't capable of having a discussion with others who have different opinions. Those people now can simply mute those who they don't like, and live inside their echo chamber, blissfully ignorant. The rest of us will reserve those tools for spammers and such. Everybody wins.

    •
I can see this as being abused and people muting others for not sharing their same opinions.
What option did they have before? Arguing and namecalling? I see it this way. If someone chooses to mute another member because they disagree with them, that means that they are saying "I will never have anything nice to say to this person and with a mouseclick I am following the adage of "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"." Which is what we've been asking people to do for years. If you can't stand how someone else is acting or what they are saying, then don't feed them, especially if you know that the exchange between the two of you is not going to be civil or kind.
While people should be able control some aspects of their experience on the website I'm not sure if this should be one of them.
Forcing someone to view another member that they don't want to, that is (IMO) more unreasonable than giving them the option to arbitrarily hide/mute them. Can you see that your statement is (in some ways) as bad or even worse than what you are worried about?

      • I don't use the feature, but I think it will eventually be abused. Someone will probably have a disagreement with another person resulting in a hasty decision to mute them.

Weren't you already able to block people? I don't see anything wrong with it, if people don't want to talk to each other then they shouldn't have to. You can do so by being mature and either muting them or ignoring them, it sounds reasonable to me.

        • I don't see myself using the mute or hide features very much. If someone's trolling, my reaction is already to ignore them. It's easier to just move on than to hide their post (which I'm not going to see again anyway). The only exception I can think of is someone who posts really long spam comments that are cumbersome to scroll past.

        • I've used it three times now, once for a spammer, once for a really offensive person, and once today for somebody harassing me. I'm finding it useful.

        • I don't feel the need to mute anybody when I can simply hide their comments. Honestly? If someone is going to mute me because they diagree with them then I probably wasn't going to have a meaningful discussion with them with or without the abillity to mute. I can only hope they grow up a bit and clean out their mute list one day.
