You will never prove that God exists.
You will never prove that God doesn't exist.
So how about all of you guys in both groups stop being assholes and accept that people have different beliefs than you?
Christians, you can still let people know that you follow Christ and you can still invite others to give your religion a try, so long as you aren't too pushy and don't try to force others to adhere to the rules of your religion.
Atheists, you can still educate people on science and continue to show the evidence of evolution, so long as you respect people's religious beliefs.
Now, this compromise will require effort from both sides. I won't be including options for atheist or Christian, because that doesn't matter. All that matters is that you accept the fact that other people have different beliefs and that you are comfortable with it.
I know this thread will fail horribly, as there are assholes on both sides that will not allow anyone to have different beliefs. I at least want the record to show that I tried.

I think some people are confusing "respect" with "compliance". My wife was raised Buddhist while I was raised Catholic (neither of us are currently practicing however). If we go to a temple with her parents, I'll follow all the traditions they may have. I'll take off my shoes if they ask. I'll bow my head in front of certain statues. I'll even bow say a few words at her ancestors' graves. Whenever she's in a church, she does the same. At no point are we worshiping a god we don't believe in, but we're showing respect for our families' beliefs. (It should be noted that in these situations we are asked to participate, not required to. We could just as easily stand outside and wait for people to finish their business. No. Harm, no foul.) At the very least you can be respectful enough to say, "I disagree, but that's cool," and move on to something else. On the other hand, if they enforce their beliefs on you, you have every right to defend yourself.

I miss you, Burny.

Edited by AStupidThing: 4/29/2015 8:23:09 AMAs long as a group's beliefs don't interfere with other people, I don't care. However, if you are a homophobic Christian who says he has the right to remove gay rights, you should not be respected.

If I were to claim that there are 4729 green flying monkeys living on the rings of Saturn, and then immediately said that I'm correct because I have faith, and that everyone else must prove me wrong, would anyone take me seriously? No, because it's obvious that I am wrong. So why should we take Christianity seriously?

Christianity has had a bad reputation over the years. Due to churches making man made rules that are not even in the bible. Like when did the bible say "Must wear your best clothing to church." Instead come as who you are and believe in god and thats it. No neef for denominations either, instead just christian. #omegabeams

Edited by TechnoKat: 4/28/2015 8:02:21 PMWe might not be able to disprove 'God' but we're doing an amazing job of pointing out and proving that things Christians say is true of him in the bible aren't so true after al. -Global Flood -Adam and Eve -Let there be Light -Creationism -Flat Earth -6,000 year old Earth -Jesus being White. Stuff like that. I mean, don't get me wrong, you can believe all you want, I don't care. But don't try to teach people that things in your book are undeniable truths and expect us to not laugh at you and tell you why you're wrong.

I don't see how the poll options are mutually exclusive. I respect ppl enough to allow them to have religious freedom and I will support that. At least to a certain extent. However I do not necessarily accept, support or respect the belief. Sure you can believe sacrificing animals will cure an illness. You can have that belief. I won't stop you from believing that, but I will stop you from acting on that belief and I definitely won't accept it. That's just an extreme example, but the same idea can apply to modern religious based beliefs. Such as, "homosexuals shouldn't marry because it's against god."

I accept that Christians can believe what they want. I don't want to accept it, though: that innocent children are indoctrinated, conscripted and claimed from the cradle to believe in obscurantism that there's no reason to believe in. It's just so sad. I will accept it, though, as long as they don't demand that we respect those beliefs.

Freedom of religion is not the same as fully accepting someone else's beliefs.
-
I will respect others beliefs that is a given. That doesn't mean I can't try to convince people of my religion. And it doesn't mean that I will support religions and cultures that teach or encourage immoral or evil behavior.

your poll options are not complementary. i can respect others' freedom of religion without accepting their beleifs.

So you want people to sit in silence and never talk about anything that makes them uncomfortable? Well i guess no minority stands a chance anymore.

I'm an atheist and if you believe God exists good for you. But if you bring it up multiple times or are plain annoying with it don't act surprised when I say something.
