Basically the ascension mechanic added in HoW is essentially a cosmetic slot since you're able to use any legendary armor to get to max light

While this system is damn awesome, it's not as free, cosmetically, as a cosmetic slot would be. This allows us to have more control over our endgame stats, but a cosmetic slot system would more varied in what we can look like. Especially with a lot of rare quality gear looking strangely awesome. If I had to chose, I'd take the ascend system over a cosmetic slot system due to effective stat customization. It still be nice to have both, though.

I thought that only worked for raid gear and iron banner gear. Faction armour can't give max light.

That'd be cool, but then what's the point of doing a raid if you don't need the gear?

To use ascension you have to play the endgame stuff to get etheric light (I think that's what it's called) and you use etheric light ascend armor. So trials of Osiris and prison of elders are still very important

Nunubird forgot to mention. to get "any piece of legendary gear to level 34", you need Etheric Light. Which can only be gained from endgame activities. Nightfall. Iron Banner. Trials of Osiris. Prison of Elders. I imagine in all but the PoE it's rare drops. So it's not like you can dork around and get to the cap, you gotta work for it, son! Also PoE gear STARTS at level 34 or has 365 attack, where everything else you have to ascend. You could end up with PoE gear before you get your hands on your first Etheric Light.

Almost, I want Tengu Armor for light level 34, but not system yet for blues to legendarys.

But a lot of the early game armor was cool too. I remember how my Titan had a knife on the middle of his chest and another knife on his forearm.
