How are people so high in faction rank?!
Is there some secret to patrols and bounties I'm missing. Granted I just started working on faction rank but at least for vanguard it takes for ever for me to level up vanguard rank! Does faction rank increase faster?

The old bounty-doubling trick worked for a while, especially with the extra nightfall exp.

Nightfall and Weekly will get you about 1,000XP right off the cuff. Throw 500 or so XP a day from Vanguard bounties plus whatever else you do like Roc strikes and it adds up quick. Two rank-ups per week (on a single character) is very achievable, while some hardcore players may see three or more.

Nightfall/ weekly heroics and make sure you do the vanguard and crucible bounties. I also do [b]a lot[/b] of ROC strikes.

NF + weekly will fill up a good deal of a rank every week. For me personally, I don't run stuff to rank up - it's just the outcome of running bounties to level up gear.
