I only buy Exotics from Xur after the Nightfall is done. If he's selling an engram for something I need (like a helmet) but is also selling that helmet, I buy the engram first.

Yeah that's what I generally do. I've found quite often the engram will turn into whatever he's selling

Yea I actually bought the helm engram he was selling and got apotheosis veil.
