I was bored tonight so I looked to see if Harold Ryan's number was listed anywhere online. I found it (although google told me the number was just Bungie's switchboard, so don't go pranking it if you find it), and the site listed his job as the owner of a company called "Arete Seven." A quick google revealed this page, which says that a Kirkland based company named Arete Seven is doing business as "Bungie." (Use CTRL-F to bring up the "find" window and type "Bungie").
I looked up the word Arete and found that it is Greek for "Noble." So Bungie is the Noble Seven Company?

If this is true I think of it as a cool find, something perhaps new, and move on with my life. If it is not true, I'll hate you for the rest of my life. [Edited on 08.26.2008 8:05 PM PDT]

This is very interesting, good find. Something I've learned from experience, however, is that people get all exited about some big thing to only find out that it was fake or didn't mean anything. (The Pheonix Alpha thing was a perfect example)
Posted by: sacktapped
Posted by: pinkfloyd018 what if bungie was just one of the seven columns of the "arete seven"?
which would they be?
The seventh, no doubt.

Bungie... Spartan Excellence... Arete... ahh..my head. [Edited on 08.26.2008 7:56 PM PDT]

Would the Bungie logo look nearly as epic if Bungie was replaced with "Arete Seven"? I think so. But think about what "Love, Arete Seven" sounds like. All in all, I have come to no conclusions, but a good find nonetheless. Heh. I just wasted five seconds of your life, and twenty of mine.
Posted by: SonicJohn Also, "dba" stands for "Doing Business As".
Yep.
Posted by: SonicJohn That Wiki page...is very interesting:
The distinction between an actual and a "fictitious" name is important because businesses with "fictitious" names give no obvious indication of the entity that is legally responsible for their operation. Therefore, for consumer protection purposes, most jurisdictions require businesses operating with fictitious names to file a DBA statement. This also reduces the possibility of two local businesses operating under the same name. Note, though, that this is not a replacement for obtaining a trademark. A DBA filing carries no legal weight in instances where a trademark would be necessary. DBA statements are often necessary with a franchise, where the franchisee may be something like "The Sauce Company", but business is done under a brand name the public would recognize, such as "Imo's Pizza" (a local St. Louis pizza restaurant). The legal name of the franchise may then be something like "The Sauce Company, Inc. D.B.A. Imo's Pizza".

Ah. I work for Dairy Queen, but it's a franchise and my paycheck doesn't actually say "Dairy Queen." The company is listed as "[The owners' first names]'s Frozen Desserts." I love how seven shows up wherever you look.

That will haunt my dreams forever. Nice find though :-)

Bungie is easier to type. Case closed.

All, in all, this doesn't really explain why "Bungie" is their fictitious business name...it simply shows the rabbit hole goes deeper than we originally anticipated...

sweet find pretty cool maybe you did finally crack the secret

Thanks everyone. I really just happened upon it. :) Achronos, Shishka, and lukems probably just got into the Bungie fighter jets and are en route to my house as we speak...
Posted by: Rein Ex Inc Wow, did you just crack one of Bungie's most highly guarded secrets?
Bungie’s Darkest Secret Although the only ever official explanation reaches new heights of unbelievable lameness, the secret of the actual Bungie name has become so closely guarded, that even a few Grizzled Ancients either don't know or aren't sure if it's true. There truly is a very strange reason for the company being called “Bungie,” and we daren't reveal it here. There are…penalties leveled at those who reveal the deepest secrets.

Haha. I didn't even think of that! A cookie to anyone who can figure out a dirty joke with the punchline, "Arete Seven." :D
Posted by: AmX15 Arete is founded on seven virtues: kindness, sincerity, passion, justice, courage, perseverance and growth.
Yes, I saw that on google as well, but if you read a bit of the article, it's referring to a group at a university, not what the word actually means.
