All this is is solar energy and mirrors. Why should I be impressed?

Mirrors can not directly transfer efficient forms of energy. The best they can do is direct heat where you point them. What if it's a cloudy day? If This new technology could allow for the transfer of energy through clouds and interference then this is a pretty cool breakthrough. Another difference between using this and using mirrors is if you use mirrors you would have to have them on the ground in direct sunlight, and then either use the light to make photovoltaic electric currents, or use the heat from the light to hear water into steam which runs a power generator. Each of these ways require power to be conducted through coils and wires into your home. If you use this technology, solar energy can be collected in space and then transferred to the surface to a power plant or your home directly. It might not sound efficient right now but the technology for this is still probably centuries away. Solar energy can theoretically be collected more efficiently in space.

I'd personally be really surprised if they got this done in decades. Maybe in an experimental stage only id believe that. I think that even if they could direct the power from space to the earth, they would still have to direct it to a power plant, and then the energy would still be electric and would still have to be conducted to homes via coils and wires. So we basically made a very expensive solar based electrical power plant. There has to be a way to make this a worthwhile power option or else no country is going to invest in it for their infrastructure. That's one reason why I think the practical application of this is centuries away.
