When i posted this topic i never thought for one moment i would get this kind of response so obviously i hit on a promonent topic in the Destiny Community.
Ive played this game since it came out as well as the beta and ive never had an exotic engram drop during a mission or while on patrol nor during PVP.
Ive gotten exotics from xur and bounties

Exotic Engrams don't drop. They aren't in the game, only White, Green, Blue and Purple. Exotics are awarded, purchased from Xur or have a chance to be given to you when decoding purple engrams
