Skip this first bit if you want the theory, its mostly just the reason I posted this and my inspiration to do so.
I'll be honest, upon Destiny's release and my purchase of aforementioned release, I had no interest in the Hive. The Fallen are space pirates which is cool, I guess, the Cabal are like an overweight Galactic Empire and the Vex have good backstory but I don't enjoy fighting them.
That changed in The Dark Below.
The one thing the Hive did well pre-TDB is mystery, something the Vex tried and failed. The names "Crota" and "Oryx" appearing with little or no mention of who they were, aside that one had killed lots of Guardians with a shiny sword we got to use.
So anyway, The Dark Below arrives and suddenly we know who Crota is, great, but what we learned has deeper implications, as I will outline below in my theory. Feel free to comment with your opinions, or your own theories.
The Theory
Before we fought Crota in The Dark Below, we faced his invasive lieutenants on the surface, namely his Eyes, Hand, Fist, Will, Might and Soul (there may be more I haven't mentioned, but the point I will make is the same). We also face the Swarm Princes, abeit in the vanilla game, who are basically his children.
This is one theory; the power of the Hive "Gods" is determined by their followers' worship. Notice how Crota never "died" on the Moon? When he first invaded nothing killed him, yet he became ethereal. This coincides with the construction of the Hellmouth.
This, for me, has a shocking truth; the Hive "Gods" are not real, they are worshipped into existence by the Hallowed Hive. Notice how the Hive are constantly praying, begging the Darkness to bring these horrors to life. The leaders of that Swarm name themselves for a certain God and ask the Darkness to create him. Crota disappeared when he took the Moon, why? For me, the answer is that he was taken back by the Darkness. The Hive them bargained with the Dark, to destroy Earth and it's light, to see their champion again. This is basically the Darkness manipulating the Hive into exterminating the Light for the price of seeing one of their Gods in the flesh. Shockingly, this shows that the Darkness is able to create Gods and does so to manipulate races. The Vex cannot understand the Heart of Darkness in the Black Garden, so they chose to worship and obey it. The Hive obey the Darkness because it can show them divinity of their design. The Cabal are invaders but are hinted to be running from something, maybe this is the Darkness pushing them to destroy the Light and the Fallen are scavengers with a reverence for anything they can't steal from.
This explains Crota, the Heart of the Black Garden, and possibly the Traveller, as being manifestations of Darkness and Light, warring against one another for a reason. Could the Traveller be manipulating Humanity into fighting the Darkness with the promise of another Golden Age, our primary reason for it's defence?
That sums up my theory, I know it's long-winded but I hope you enjoy it and my take on the Destiny universe. They say Warlocks are the thinkers, but my Titan does his fair share.

Edited by Fury: 8/5/2015 6:14:08 AMThe swarm princes are not his children. The name at the end of their name ______ prince is the god that they serve.

I like this theory but why is Oryx coming on the dreadnaught if he could just be summoned on earth through prayer. I feel like we're being manipulated though. I think the traveler finds a new species to give powers so they can destroy darkness and provide light til they can do no more and cast aside like the fallen. Ultimately I think we're casualties in an eternal battle between the light and dark. Darkness uses hive, traveler uses us..

im going to throw this out there when we jump into the hell mouth and get through the first room we are in crotas "plain" his relm he resides in. which is why we go towards the light and it goes into a load screen we travel to his dimension. The only way to actually kill him is in his own materialized world and to use your soul or light (which is why you touch the rock) to summon him. I wouldnt say its an illusion created by the darkness. you know how when we fight the eye of crota and dinckle bot starts talking about the giant orb thing that we destroy and says its communicate with something not from our universe accross the system? Meaning their from a different dimentional plain that just how i look at it. Which explains summoning pits you know how the hive randomly come out of the black liquid on the ground or travel through a portal with a ship their the onlu ships that do that among the enemies? Their traveling dimensional plains in and out of our universe. Thats how i look at it but your theory is pretty well thought honestly.

I'd disagree with us being manipulated. I'd say we have the illusion of choice. We are trying to survive. What golden age is there without people to build it. I've always wondered as to why the bottom of the traveler is so damaged? Did we try to attack from below and it wiped all our memories?

Wow. You managed to create a story from the mess that is destiny.
-
Is it just me, or is most of year 1/2 focused on the hive?

Edited by D0OM_6-6-6Xx: 7/28/2015 12:00:29 PMI think this thing the Cabal are running from is Oryx and the Dreadnaught. It would be cool if the Cabal recognized we have a common bent and we got to team up with them.
-
The Hive are actually the final form of the infected from The Last of Us. Bloaters taken up a notch.
-
Definently a possibility since the swarm princes willed crota's sword into existence
-
For anyone wondering how Crota was still fighting even after we destroyed his soul and sword: My theory is that the guy we fight isn't Crota, well not really. It's kind of like an imprint he left behind after he was defeated. It isn't a corporeal or an ethereal form, it's less than that it's an echo of his darkness. The reason that the swordbearers have his sword and not him is because he isn't real enough to wield it. The weapon you see Crota wield isn't actually a weapon at all, it's an extension of himself. If there are any holes in my theory please (respectfully) point them out.

I always thought the Hive were the "darkness" and that the fallen, vex, and cabal are just different factions with their own interests.
-
If that's true. Why is Oryx coming for us? He's coming from the edge of the system, or possibly another realm, either way supposed to be powerful, really powerful. I don't think the darkness created him.
-
Ok all that makes sense but what about when guardians make their own fate or whatever it says in the vault of glass we weren't really manipulated we choose our own fates
-
Guardians hope the traveler can restore them (whether or not the traveler is evil or not) as for the Hive I believe they were the first to be consumed and transformed by the darkness to hunt the traveler as for the vex I believe they're (for lack of a better word) neutral in a sense since their are multiple forms of vex representing different timelines (both possible and inevitable) they exist to primarily to protect time and (fore)see the traveler and the guardians as a threat. cabal are an empire trying to exploit the darkness in order to expand their empire and fallen were driven mad by the darkness
-
The hive gain their powers from the Darkness, much like guardians recieve theirs from the Traveler. This raises questions as Fallen are actively fighting hive, possibly meaning that the Darkness perhaps caused a collapse to them too, reducing them to simple pirates, desperately fighting for scraps and habitable places. I guess the only truly evil races are the hive and vex, but i cannot imagine those two fighting together. The Cabal might be exiles forced out of their homeworlds aswell, but given their potential to "blow up planets and moons just for getting in their way", couldnt they just press a button and watch earth blow up?
-
Thanks for the great responses, guys! Your theories are awesome! On another note, what has been your favourite race in Destiny so far? I love the Cabal because of how unique they are (they must be one of the few amphibian races in sci-fi).
-
I was wondering.. Is the dark below worth the money
-
The heart of the black garden I believe is a corrupted mass of radiolaria using the nearby vex as conduits for calculations and simulations. Apparently the vex were architects of the traveler in shaping the worlds. When the darkness came it changed the vex.

Well my belief is that the Hive were the first to be conquered by the Darkness and oryx had risen from the aftermath. Cabal are a degrading empire that are relying on the darkness in order to continue to expand but aren't true allies. Vex are a bit more complicated I believe the true core of the vex are neither good or evil who are just guarding the gate ways of time while the others are just "possible" future versions of the vex. And fallen origins are already explained as a former race that the traveler lifted up then abandoned them when the darkness was right on the travelers tail well those are my theories on hive cabal and vex
-
I was under the impression the Cabal were running from Oryx. Furthermore: I believe the Hive gods were the most devotional and successful Hive leaders chosen by the darkness to become elevated to godhood. So after Crota wrecked thousands of Guardians and stole their light for them, he was elevated to godhood by Oryx (and Oryx we elevated by the darkness himself, that's why he can create the Taken) thus being the Son of Oryx. The Hive through the destruction of light get the chance to become "elevated" but you can't just kill a bunch of stuff, you have to appeal to the gods to ascend, that's why the worship their gods so much.
-
Crota is the ghost of the Dead Traveller. I believe hive are the 'zombies' of dead guardians. For a bit of nightmare fuel: Play the Cauldron and look up.
-
This is a decent theory. Personally I think differently, but this definitely has some strong points. As for the Black Heart I strongly disagree, I believe that is the manifestations of self doubt and insecurities of Alpha Lupi (the traveler) which is why it's in the Garden. I'd like to invite you to my clan, The Collective of Knowledge, I'm an admin so o can quickly accept you. We're lore based and I am archiving everything in destiny, while another is making the "lore bible" I'm sure he'd love your insight on Hive.

Watch this video on YouTube by TerraMantis on Destiny Lore Crota. He ties together all the lore and grimoire cards and talks about the events leading up to the raid and what may come after. It's a phenomenal video.
