You will start finding armour with light pretty much everywhere. The more light, the higher your level.
The amount of light on a piece of armour is displayed with the amount of discipline etc...
As you get to higher levels you will start unlocking things like raids and weekly strikes. These will generally drop weapons/armour/upgrade materials. When you upgrade the defence of a piece of armour you increase the light level that it carries. Light only appears on rare/legendary/exotic.

Notes of light are used for Xur. A quick description is Xur come every almost every Friday and Saturday and sells exotic gear for motes of light and strange coins. Save both of these thing because there might be a week where you want something from him. All his armor is 13 coins special and heavy weapons are 13 as well and all primary are 17 coins.

You can also buy things from the speaker for motes, but they don't do anything. They just look cool. Also when you take part in the Iron Banner if you get a weapon with bad perks, you can Re-Roll the perks for an amount of motes at lord Saladin while Iron Banner is active. Edit; you can only re roll Iron Banner weapons
