UltronEagle did a fine job, and yes I saw your reply to him but he makes the most universal case....if a developer gets a lot of money before the game even ships (Destiny) then they don't have to worry about making the game groundbreaking, they already have our money. But if people didn't pre-order, developers would be forced to make their games of really high quality to ensure people buy the game and ensure that the developer can make sequels. I can assure you if no one pre-ordered Destiny, it would not have the figures it did on release, using that game as the most relevant example.

  • That's what I was pointing out. They DON'T get "a lot of money" (in mega corporation terms). And using these blockbusters as an example doesn't accurately describe the entire spectrum of game releases. If you look at the preorder numbers for Destiny or even GTA V I bet what they made from preorders doesn't cover what they spent on JUST the marketing. Also, Destiny's not a bad game. Maybe it wasn't what you or I thought it was going to be but, for me, it turned into something I really enjoyed. Preorders don't "make them a bunch of money." They've already dumped (sometimes hundreds of) millions of dollars into these games. Preorders don't come close to making them any money.

  • I never said preorders "make them a bunch of money" but preorders can make them a lot of the game is hyped enough. And for the record, I enjoyed Destiny as well but that is irrelevant, all these pre-order bonuses are what hurts the industry as well, yes they are mouth watering sometimes, but many miss the days where you just unlocked shit

[/quote] My bad... I meant a lot. ;) But they do worry about making it groundbreaking. They've been worrying about it for YEARS before there was any hype (that they made) or an ability to preorder. And the preorders don't make them any extra money. All the people that preorder are going to buy it anyway (or are idiots... lol) Even with "bad" games, the majority of purchases happen after the game is released, not before. I do agree with you on all those weird bonuses with each retailer having a different kind of bonus but... Is that really that big of a problem? I used to preorder games back in the FFVII days out of fear of not getting a copy. I think I got a t-shirt for that one. That said, do you really care about any of the preorder bonuses? Some skins (Evolve)? A blimp (GTA V)? Would you rather that stuff just didn't exist?
