My art teacher in high school gave me some great advice. Although i thought he was a dick at the time. He told me,"no cartoons in my class. Stop drawing what you think you see and start drawing whats actually there." He also taught me the importance of looking at the human body (bones and muscles) before jumping in on an entire portrait. Start with the shape of the head and spine and work from there. Angle of the shoulders and knowing where the eyes are looking.

  • A great way to stop concentrating on what you think youre seeing is to take something like a candy wrapper and crinkle it up into a ball, then flatten it out a bit and try drawing it, focusing on each little part by itself. Draw every little triangle and square you see by itself to make one whole picture! Youll be amazed at the work of art you come out with!

  • http://www.how-to-draw-and-paint.com/how-to-draw-faces.html. This page shows a great exercise on face proportions. I remember my art teacher telling me,"it seems weird but if you draw a line across the center of your face, thats where the eyes sit."
