Chapter 1 A sigh escaped from me as I sat down on the soft grass in the Tower courtyard. It had been an exciting day. My buddy, Bear(a titan) and I had gone to mars in order to take a few scans of cabal complexes. A patrolling psion had caught us and raised the alarm. Next thing we knew we were facing a dozen legionaries, a few phalanxes 2 centurions and a colossus. It took us a while but we cleared them up and returned with our scans. Bear and I were now sitting down and resting in the Tower. Of course, Bear wasn't his real name, guardians take up separate names to avoid giving up your name to the enemy by being called it in the heat of a battle. My name is Jackal. Bear had started calling me Jack for short and it had stuck. "Jackal, Ikora want's to see you," It was Tiger, a hunter. "Bear, Zavala has something to discuss with you as well." "Well then we'd better go see what for then. Come on Jack." Bear grasped my forearm and helped me up. As we walked to the hall of the guardians I heard a voice in my head. So what do you think Ikora wants with us? It was Arron, my ghost. "Probably a new mission. Some Kell stirring up trouble I bet." I wouldn't be so sure, Ikora doesn't usually request simple things like that face to face. Neither does Zavala. It must be something serious. "Maybe..." Stepped into the hall of the guardians to find that the vanguard were not in their usual positions. Ikora was staring out the window, Zavala was stroking his chin deep in thought his eyes following the figure of Cayde-6 who was pacing furiously , an angry look on his face. "Ahem." Bear stepped forward and the Vanguard all turned to look at him, except Cayde. He was still pacing. "Ah thank you both for coming," Ikora gave a forced smile " as you may be able to tell we have a slight problem." She gestured to Cayde-6 who was still pacing the floor angrily. “We’d be glad to help.” Bear saluted and I couldn’t resist a smile. Always the boy scout Bear was.” I saw that Ikora thought the same. “Well we are grateful for that,” A frown crossed Ikora’s face,”the thing is, we need you to find a Hunter who went dark on Europa.” My jaw dropped in surprise. “Europa! Since when have guardians been going to Europa?” “Well that’s just it. He was the first one. Cayde thought they could handle it so he sent them there to scope it out. We’ve gotten back two reports total. By now it should be approximately 5. But they haven’t sent in a new report since his last one. And their last report was a bit uh, frightening.” Commander Zavala Stepped up and his Ghost materialized in front of him to begin playing a transmission. “After one week on Europa my scans have shown no sentient life. Although there are repeated signs of energy here and there we have not been able to pin-point the locations of these sources. I’m not sure what it is and I have no substantial evidence but I do have a feeling. Something is out there. It’s not Vex, or Cabal. They would have taken hold here already. Same goes for the Hive. I don’t think it’s the Fallen. It’s something else. Something darker. I will get back to you in my next report.” Zavala’s ghost dematerialized and he spoke, “That was his first transmission. His second was shorter and much more worrying.” The ghost again materialized and began to play back the transmission. “I’ve found them. Or rather they found me. I don’t know how or even what these things even are. They came out of nowhere. One second nothing. The next I’m surrounded. It’s a miracle I’m still alive. I will send you my scans of … Oh god. They found me.” The transmission ended abruptly as Zavala’s ghost dematerialized. “Since this transmission we haven’t heard from them. It’s been 3 weeks. It’s time we send up a team to find them.” Ikora said looking at Bear and I. “Wait,” Bear began “why didn’t he already have a team with him? Guardians never go alone. Well except for Wolf but he’s a legend.” Ikora pursed her lips, “That’s just it. The guardian who went dark was Wolf.
