The Story of Iris

Truth be told, the Awoken are a mysterious race. They seek refuge at the furthest reaches of the system, borderline between the Light and the Darkness. Human in form, yet different by nature, the Awoken are not to be trusted. The Awoken Guardians that call the Tower home are always looked down on. Even more so than the appearance of the even more mysterious, Xûr, the Agent of the Nine. Who are the Nine? Are they a superior race? Are they as intelligent as the Vex? Are they with the machines? Or, are they lowest forms of life that lurk in the shadows like the roaches on Earth? Xûr's appearance is all but, convincing to the latter. Opening up his black market shop in the Tower while no one questions it. Selling high end equipment and materials, the Guardians have come to look forward to this vendors arrival, which has become periodical. Where does Xûr obtain these valuable treasures? And even more frightening to imagine, how? But, something happened the other day that has changed my life. With my Second-in-Command and a fireteam of four other brave guardians, we ventured into the Vault of Glass to rid the universe of its biggest threat to its time and continuum. Atheon, has been plotting against the very essence of existence to rewrite history under his control. We would not stand for this. My fireteam and I descended into the very depths of Venus and came face to face with the monster himself. We were slaughtered. But, before we could make our retreat with what little dignity we had left, a Ghost appeared as we made our climb back up the abyss. It led us back to the entrance of the Vault but then something strange took place. A portal deep down in the trenches of the cliffs was closing and what materialized from its electric pulse, laid a woman on the floor. Her body laid motionless, me and my only friend, Viktor, stood gazing at this Awoken female that was clinging to life. "Where did she come from, Commander?" Viktor spoke, his voice nearly quivering in fear. "The portal has closed. It must open again to see where this creature spawned from," Commander Seven said as he kneels beside the fallen Awoken. "Should we take her back with us? Find out where she came from?" Viktor asks as brings up his Ghost. The Ghost that led them to the dying woman rises from the other side of her body. "Can you tell who this is, Ghost?" Commander Seven asks. "Searching... Data history corrupted. Need original user login to access files," it speaks. "Can you save her?" Viktor asks. "..... Life support functionality online... Some features damaged. I can only keep her alive for a few more hours. She'll need proper medical attention." "We have a doctor onboard the Wolf Fang. He can save her, Commander," Viktor suggests as he radios in the ship. "We shall. Will you come with us, Ghost?" "Yes. Of course, Commander." "Very well then. Let us get back to the surface and out of this hell hole." One week later.... "How is she doing?" Commander Seven asks his Vanguard Medical Staff. "She's improved. We were able to take her off Life Support and she has managed to breathe on her own. Her vitals are normal. But, her brainwave patterns have been, erratic," Doctor Lupin says bringing the Commander a chart hologram. "Erratic? Is there any damage?" "No, just a lot of activity. Like if she is having a real bad nightmare. She keeps uttering the Nine." "The Nine?" "Yes. Now may be a good time to ask Xûr if he knows anything of this. Commander Zavala said he is in the Tower as we speak." "His usual market practices?" "Indeed. He is the only known Nine to come out of hiding. Find him as soon as possible." "I will. How long until we arrive at the Tower?" Commander Seven speaks up into the ships intercom. "Five hours, sir," the pilot replies. "Excellent. How long until our fallen stranger regains consciousness?" The Commander asks the doctor. "Within the next few hours or so. We will administer an adrenaline shot if you mist have her up now?" "Do it." The doctor grabs a cable and plugs it into the Heart Monitor and routes another to an IV machine. A nurse brings out an adrenaline pod, the liquid radiating a soft blue glow. "Administering adrenaline now." The Awokens body glows in a white soft haze then it subsides. "Injection complete." The females eyelids flutter from the brightness of the lights over her body. She takes in a deep gasp and immediately sits up, coughing. Everyone stands in place, their eyes opened wide and waiting to see what she does next. The female tries to calm her body as she looks around the room, her eyes glowing in a bright orange fiery fright. "Where am I?! Who are you?!" She yells jumping off the exam table. Two guards ready their weapons but, Commander Seven holds up his hand, ordering them to stand down. They look at each and step back, lowering their weapons. The Awoken woman stares at the Commander. A radiance emitting from her body. "We won't hurt you. We saved you from your death," Commander Seven explains. "From what?" "You don't recall what happened to you?" "No." "Well, we found you in the Vault of Glass at the opening of a portal in the Cliffs. You were clinging onto whatever life you drew breath from. Your Ghost led us to you, Guardian." "I am not a Guardian." "Then how do you possess a Ghost?" "... I don't know..." "Well, your Ghost came along and needs your biometrics to access your profile. We can find out who you are together." "Why do you wanna know who I am?" "You trace signature came from the Nine. A very rare species that we do not fully understand. And your presence in the Vault at that portal must be solved." "Why were you in the Vault in the first place?" "An assignment given to us." "By whom?" "... The Speaker..." The Awoken female glares at him. Her eyes change color and she read his thoughts. The room stays silent as they try to figure out what she is doing. "You are lying." "It is the truth, I swear to you." "You're lying!" Commander Seven looks at his crew then back at the woman. "How would you know if I am lying?" "I can hear your thoughts." "... You can read our minds?" "... You are all a part of a front. A deceitful group of Guardians. You use it to gain access to the Tower Monarchs... You believe in something..." "... How do you possess this gift?" The woman looks at her Ghost, which was looking around, pacing from one Guardian to the next, terrified. "Tell them," she says to it. "Are you sure?" "They may be who we are looking for." "The WBAN is online isn't it?" "I can't remember everything." "Ok. Well if you are sure of this..." "Only one way to find out..." The Ghost approaches the Awoken and scans her. A long pause goes by as it prepares the information. "The data-mines indicate that your name is Iris, the Hybrid. A genetic mutation performed by the Nine... The Nine?... Data not found on the Nine. It has been deleted. Iris is a secret project first started at the age of the Collapse. Rasputin gave detailed files on how to construct a new form of Guardian... From... The Traveler..." "The Traveler?!" Commander Seven exclaims. "Iris has a genetic code composed of both the Light and Darkness. A hybrid of all three known classes of Guardians. One third Hunter, another Warlock and finally, Titan. She can also transform her gender and appear as any species in this Quadrant." "What the hell?!" Commander Seven gasps. Iris stares at her Ghost. "What happened prior to their discovery of my body in the Vault?" "... Data is corrupted in some areas... All I can find is... You were sent from a Nine research facility before it was destroyed by the Traveler." "Why would the Traveler destroy its own creation?" Commander Seven asks as he steps up towards Iris. "There are clumps of data missing from her personal files. Though, it seems like she is able to access them by memories in her dreams," the Ghost adds. "Dreams?" Commander Seven asks. "Yes. Her mind needs to channel a certain brainwave pattern in order to decrypt the data thats locked inside." "Can Master Rahool do anything about that?" "... No. His skills are no match for this type of decryption. It is a Nine firewall. Not even I can crack it nor can anyone else that we know of... Except maybe for one other..." "Xûr..." Commander Seven utters. The intercom for the ship statics. "Sir, we have arrived at the Tower."
