The World: Behind one-way glass

Destiny is a game I can't put down. I splurg bought Dragon Age:Inquisition and I've honestly played most Destiny since. So there's something to this game that is really really addictive. So I asked myself what? After much thought and scrutinizing, I've come to realize it's the minute-to-minute gameplay. Flyiny around on your sparrow and pumping Fallen full of lead is just something I don't get very tired of. The addition of the Tumbler sparrow turned this game into Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Suddenly it wasn't just encounters, it was also ramps, half-pipes, and epic ski jumps into the abyss. So kudos. But then I got to thinking: What else do I love about this game? One thing began to stand out in my mind. I love the story of Kabr and the Vault of Glass. (linkage: http://www.bungie.net/sr/Forum/Post/71666640/0/0) Somehow I got invested in Kabr's struggle, his confusion and being unable to remember his fireteam that got deleted from existence. That whole storyline dragged me in and kept me riveted. And the biggest tragedy? It's not even in the game. This realization that I was more invested in a character mentioned only in the passing and in grimoire cards made me realize how not invested I am in many characters that are featured far more frequently in Destiny. Let's take for example Omnigul, the recently introduced minor baddy in the Dark Below DLC. She first appears out of the blue in the first DLC story mission. Yes, she is a unique model. But I've never heard of her in lore before. I don't have any history or relationship with her. Eris appears to, but that doesn't effect me as a player. This honestly made me realize the biggest flaw in Destiny and what's keeping me from investing in the total universe: The Guardian (player) is an outside force with no history or involvement in the events or characters of the series to date. We are a faceless tool. A hired gun to drive the plot from NPC to NPC. Which is a damn shame, because there's a host of interesting characters we could develop personal relationships with. Cayde-6 is my Hunter buddy. I want to see him in action. I want to make him proud as a Hunter. The Speaker? Why does he wear a mask? Why do we get ominous overtones from him? The Factions? What are their motivations? Why are they vying for power and what does the outcome of said struggle mean for the city. Why is Xur coming to the Tower to equip Guardians and what do his mysterious masters want from the Guardians? Who are they? I'm looking at this world from behind glass. It's pretty, enticing, and I can't be a part of it yet. And I desperately want to be. Let me in BUNGiE. Get me invested. My body is ready.

 • I feel you here. It's so... almost. The whole experience is... almost. I can almost get involved in the universe, but not really. I almost feel awesome doing things with my team, but not really. I almost feel like I'm exploring, and discovering, and going out into the unknown... but not really. I don't even almost feel like my characters have a reason to be here. They're just out of place. I would REALLY like to see more lore, more things to rope the player in. Some meat. That and a beefed up progression system, and I'd be hopelessly lost to this game.
