Destiny was recently announced as "The Most Pre-Ordered New IP in History."
Here are the numbers by platform(as of August 2nd, 2014):
Total on Playstation: 691,246
PS4: 592,955
PS3: 98,291

Total on Xbox: 688,587
XB1: 486,440
360: 202,147

Grand Total:1,379,833
Despite Destiny primarily being marketed to the Playstation player base and PS4 drastically outselling the Xbox One, the difference in preorders(as of 8/2/2014) is small. Why is this?
It's important to note that these numbers only represent the United States.

Edit: Added a grand total.

Unless you live in a large city preorders are generally unnecessary. I live in southwest Florida, other than the beta I had no real reason to preorder the game. I shared my beta keys with friends who will purchase the game, but again they have no reason to preorder... They played the beta and enjoyed it enough where they will buy it. I've no doubt the game will do well, the preorder numbers just tend to be the people who do follow things like E3 or Gamescom (like me:p)
