Activision earnings miss, stock down 10% today.. Here's what they had to say about Destiny

In case you all didn't hear, Activision (ATVI), missed Q4 earnings by 0.03 in EPS and $80mm in revenue From the ATVI earnings call transcript: "First of all, please note that as was mentioned earlier, we do not expect a full-game Destiny release this year, which has an approximately $0.15 impact on our guidance. A full-game Destiny sequel is now expected in 2017 ... Note that both the Destiny timing and the King compensation impact are included in our $1.75 non-GAAP EPS guidance for the year." "And our partnership with Sony is off to a great start on both Call of Duty and Destiny." "we also saw phenomenal reception to in-game content and services. This is a virtuous cycle. Engagement creates the opportunity for us to earn additional player investment by providing more great content, which in turn leads to more engagement. Along with our partners at Bungie, we continued to grow Destiny's incredibly loyal audience base and introduce new ways to excite the community throughout the year, culminating in the release of The Taken King, which achieved record digital attach rates in Q3. And the Destiny community responded well to the new content we made available for purchase in-game in Q4, which allowed players to customize their experience." "Turning to Destiny, the Destiny community is one of the most passionate, loyal audiences for a game that we have ever seen. Our audience has logged nearly three billion hours in the game. We're excited to announce that we will be bringing a large new expansion to Destiny this year that players are going to love. We will also be delivering other content and events throughout the year to keep the community engaged. We are also working with Bungie on the sequel to Destiny, which will be coming in 2017, and we look forward to sharing more with you on this in the future." Q & A Brian J. Pitz - Jefferies LLC "A question on Destiny. Lots of change obviously going on at Bungie right now. Maybe you could comment on what it all means? And then any commentary maybe on micro transaction plans for the driving of ongoing engagement? Thanks so much." Eric Hirshberg - President and Chief Executive Officer, Activision Publishing, Inc. "Sure. Thanks, Brian. So, first of all, it's important for us to keep it in context and acknowledge that we have incredible success on our hands with Destiny that we've created with Bungie, the partnership between Activision and Bungie has proven to be a potent one and we don't see that changing. I think Bungie's proven themselves to be a capable team over many years and many games and combinations of leadership. So while the decisions that they made recently related to their organization are up to them, we're confident that our interests remain 100% aligned and that we're going to continue together to deliver amazing content for our shared fans. On the second part of your question, Destiny is one of the most engaging games of all time and our first job is to make sure that it stays that way. So all the content that we're providing is designed to make sure that we not only capitalize on that engagement, but also continue to make the game better and better for our fans, and that's why we're planning on delivering a large expansion this year and more incremental content along the way to keep fans engaged. And of course we're looking forward to Destiny 2 in 2017." ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please note that the emphasis in these quotes are mine. I tried to pick the most relevant pieces from the transcript but feel free to read the whole thing at: http://seekingalpha.com/article/3890016-activision-blizzard-atvi-robert-kotick-q4-2015-results-earnings-call-transcript So what does all this mean?? To me it looks like ATVI is mostly hurting from the erosion of World of Warcraft (WOW) and the acquisition of King Digital (makers of Candy Crush). They are now leaning on other games (like Destiny) to bring in some incremental revenue from micro transactions. If I were to guess, I would think ATVI will try to milk us for the extra micro transaction $$$ until they release a large expansion for holiday 2016, then release Destiny 2 in holiday 2017. I understand a company needs to make money, but hurting your loyal fanbase is not a smart idea. I have not been active in Destiny for quite some time due to the lack of content and cash grabbing techniques of ATVI. If we really want change.. we need to speak ATVI's language.. MONEY. I say that if this new expansion does NOT live up to the expectations of the community that we need to take the $$$ we would have spent and open a short position in ATVI stock. Edit: OK.. so maybe shorting the stock is going a little too far. All I am saying is that the only way we are going to be able to produce change is to vote with our wallets. I was pretty disappointed reading through the earnings transcript today and thought I would share my views to the general Destiny community that probably doesn't follow these things. Please understand that these are just my opinions and my only aim is to start a discussion. TL;DR Sequel won't be out until 2017, "large new expansion" will be out in 2016. Activision plans to continue to utilizing "one of the most passionate, loyal audiences for a game that we have ever seen" by throwing micro transactions into AAA games like Destiny and COD.

  • I can't wait to see how many buy in to the dlc and destiny 2, cause no way I'm falling for the same shit again. Bungie has no idea where or what to do with the game, they should hand it over to a decent dev team, not the half wits they have atm

    • For those saying don't spend and speak with your wallet. Don't be so ignorant of what's happening here. This game is not a gift from the gods. It is a enterprise intended to make money, to make a profit! If the company doesn't make money, the company will stop making destiny. And not once have I been unable to log in because I didn't buy an emote before reset....no one is forcing you to buy jack shit! Here's what I saw in the piece...(and I'm no professional but I invest as a hobby so analyse these sorts of things quite a bit. I have pretty good idea of what I'm interpreting.) ..Activision stock price has fallen a little after announcing a delay to the release of D2. This is no big deal, infact many investors will look to buy stock at lower prices ready for the climb back up. The whole response looks like nothing more than damage control to reassure skittish investors after a small price drop, completely normal. ..Activision is very happy with the whole destiny enterprise at this time and, while delaying D2, are continuing to drive new content, etc, in the meantime in order to keep the players engaged. Its finacially worth the effort, money, and time to do so. ..Activision has noted the changes and rumours around bungies corporate decisions of late but are confident that the corporation will deliver on their side of any contracts and projects, including destiny and destiny 2. ..Yes Activision and bungie are looking to microtransactions to help boost game profit after they were WELL RECEIVED BY THE COMMUNITY IN Q4. In other words, enough of the player Base accepted the transactions and choose to spend enough that it's a viable part of the corporations financial plan. That's right, all of you saying the whole or most of the community hates microtransactions...You're wrong! A company doesn't make an announcement for investors like this if the figures don't add up because investors have access to those figures and can check for themselves. In other words, just keep doing what we're all doing and D2 will arrive next year and will be massive due to the love for destiny (due to how much the company can expect to earn from it ) That's right, keep playing, buy an emote or bitch about having the option to buy an emote. Keep grinding the pvp events, or bitching about them. Keep kicking oryx's ass or bitching about how you can't. Either way, the more passion you show the more the corporations will want to continue producing the game. But stop telling folks to not spend money. If someone wants to spend a couple quid/bucks on a silly dnace then its up to them. Likewsie if you dont want to spend, no one forcing you to. If all of a sudden no one made a single micro transaction or no body buys an expansion, the corporations will just close the projects and move to something else. They'll lose some money yet continue trading, but we'll lose the game we're all so passionate about.

Business 101. Do your homework and stop listening to others. If they know everything then they don't need to work. As far I'm concern Destiny must do better to be competitive with Blizzard's Overwatch. Time will tell.

TBH the moment Deej was hired for PR I knew Bungie lost their soul. A partnership with Activision was no surpise at that point and always shows one thing within history. Activision always wins, its studios on the other hand eventually get squashed if they don't fall in line and become mediocre and uninspiring. Different era, different Bungie. There was some hope at first (blame slimey PR and Marketing), but with the final product (vanilla destiny) and public scandals (Marty) it became clear as day that Bungie wasn't the exception with Activision but now the norm. Bungie lost something that money can't buy for a lot of studios, an awesome legacy and reputation, oh and trust.

              • Okay, it's clear there aren't a lot of business majors in the forums. Neither Activision nor Bungie is interested in our opinions other than what our wallets tell them. They don't care if you bitch about how unhappy you are, as long as you continue to give then your money. They don't care how much you claim to hate every second of your play time so long as you continue to log time that builds their activity quotes. According to the numbers, Destiny IS the most successful title released in a very long time. They don't need our opinion when their investors are only interested in income potential. For -blam!- sake, an education isn't that hard to get.

It is not the most engaging game of all time. No wonder bungie is allowed to keep -blam!-ing us, lying to us, and do whatever they want, because activision is blind.

                        • Is anyone else utterly disgusted after reading this?! This is what happens when you feed the beast people. Engagement? Loyalty? EXCITING CONTENT?! GTFO. This is exactly why people shouldn't pre-order or blindly throw money at devs even when they screw up because you're only encouraging more shitty consequences later. And to hell with all the mouthbreathers who don't know any better/never played any games that truly offered quality content and valued their playerbase. I used to count Bungie among those devs right up until this game. as much as i hated Halo Reach's campaign, at least the multiplayer experience (apart from Armor Lock, may that ability burn in hell for eternity) was incredibly solid. They even went so far as to add community made forge maps into the official rotations. It was *awesome*. Now we an entrie year's worth of content voided, a laggy and unbalanced PvP full of abuses and a stale raid for 5 months straight with some of the most punishing RNG (with regards to loot) I have ever seen. This is not respecting your fan base, it's milking corporate sheoples like the good little consumer whores they are.
