Edited by Main Antagonist: 2/2/2016 11:23:21 PM- Practice scales, even if it's just one three string scale, make that scale your bitch. - Use your pinky as often as you can building strength with that little -blam!-er early on is important - Don't let chord charts scare you - Take your time when learning something. Don't try and play something up to speed (or faster) from the get go - Have fun and understand that messing up is just another part of learning

Edited by o_____________o: 2/4/2016 10:34:48 PMOkay, so the biggest thing I can say right off the bat is to learn the proper posture, and to play plenty of scales. What is the proper posture? *Head level with shoulders *Left hand thumb behind fretboard at all times (unless the neck is narrow, then it's not as necessary) *If you are playing with your fingers, allow your nails on the playing hand to grow out somewhat. Shape them so that the nail and flesh strike the string as you pluck. (It produces the best tone if the fingernail acts as sort of a ramp for the string to glide off of. *Constantly exercise slurs (otherwise known as hammer-ons and pull-offs. It will build finger strength.) *If you are playing with a pick, well, look it up. It's been a while since I've used one. If you don't want to read music, then you can use tabs. (I tend to dislike them because I've been trained to read music, and I find that I can play scores faster than reading numbers.) However, if you really want to get serious about playing, I highly recommend this book. Even if you aren't into classical music, it will teach you a shitload of techniques, how to read music, how to play several fret positions, etc. Resources: I've been playing for 20 years and I've taken private lessons at a pretty prestigious college. (I've gotten rusty :S) Anyway, hope this helps. EDIT: Additional tips *when you learn a song, try playing it with a metronome. You will be shocked at how many flaws it will expose. Then you can tighten up your play style. *Here is a grueling, yet rewarding exercise you should do every day: -Starting from the low E string, play frets 1-4 -move to next string, do the same thing. Keep doing this until you reach high E. -Do it backwards until you reach low E again -play frets 2-5, repeat the above steps. Doing this will quickly build finger strength. It's boring, it will be painful, but do it enough and your muscles will be learning how to navigate the fretboard quickly. This can exercise can also be used with slurs.

Learn music theory, the circle of fifths, intervals, and scales with their modal counterparts. It'll make learning any instrument that much easier.

Cheers to learning an instrument! I myself need to get back into the swing of playing bass guitar. Its a great past time and can be both relaxing and a lot of fun. Don't get caught off guard if you struggle a bit in the beginning and keep at it! You'll find you'll improve over time if you stick with it. I recommend practicing scales and maybe picking up a good intro book for a few pieces to play on top of learning pieces you might want to learn that you enjoy.

Get rocksmith if you want fingering but not the know how on reading music.

Learn to read guitar tabs. Shit is awesome. Any song, look up the tab, study that shit. You'll be able to see how it's played and learn it yourself. Keep at it. I'm 12 years self taught. Do not stop playing for an extended period of time. If you don't use it, you lose it. Take time to just mess around with it. You'll be surprised at what you discover.
chick's love that shit
Dont use penis as pik....always wear a strap on when tunning guitar and most importantly never try to headbang full force infront of mirror....will get metal neck and ur head will feel like it weighs 1000 pounds :3

Take a lesson, even if it's just one. Having a professional help get you started will go a long way.
-
Learn to read music also

I'm a bass player ._.
-
I'm learning to play too!

Just don't end up being that one guitar player who only knows how to play that one song on the radio.
it happens a lot more than you think. People would just buy the guitar just for that one song.
The masterplan is a tuuunnneeeee If you like oasis Learn a few of their songs to get your Chord changes up to pace. Songs like half the world away. Wonderwall. Whatever. The masterplan is probably more difficult than those. Then maybe learn a few riffs like cigarettes and alcohol. Shakermaker. Supersonic intro. Gets you playing in different ways rather than just playing chords all the time. Good luck!

I can play a handful of instruments but I've always wanted to learn piano. Not quite ambidextrous enough.
-
I can play anything. I'm a quick learner. But the best was drums.. I loved my drums, it sucked I had to get rid :'( but it just came so naturally to me.
-
Make sure you learn as many chords as possible before moving on to fingerpicking, if you're planning on that.

Edited by Æsir: 2/3/2016 3:11:18 PMIf you want to play lead guitar focus on scales, if you want to play rhythm guitar focus on chords. I also recommend the use of finger ease, it not only reduces friction on the strings but it also treats your calluses and keeps them in good nick.

Try this song https://youtu.be/ZatK5jE4n8c

Learn from fellow guitarist but don't stick to covers, make your own music. Also a quick way I learned chords was to continually press up and down on the strings while my fingers were forming a chord, this allowed for muscle memory to form.

I am as well, quitting soon to pursue drums though.
