As you may well know, today is the national holiday known as Christopher Columbus day. This is one of the most sacred American holidays of the year, and is celebrated as such. Christopher Columbus was one of the great explorers of his time. With his excellent navigational skills he set out on a journey to China, but got lost and went to North America instead. Contrary to popular belief, Columbus actually did discover the New World. The fact that millions of people were already living there is completely irrelevant. Being the kind soul he was, Columbus enslaved hundreds of their people, used them as manual labor on his hunt for riches and came up with the racial slur “Indian”. Little did he know this would stick for hundreds of years. His legacy forged, Columbus sailed home, making sure to leave plenty of Europeans to farm the native’s resources. Today, we are all grateful for his selfless acts. We are grateful for slurs, decreased Native American population, and most importantly, a seemingly random and pointless day off of school and work. So grateful in fact, that we changed his given Italian name from Columbo to Columbus. After all, Columbo is way too hard for us silly Americans to pronounce.
Happy Columbus day!
