The One-Hit-Kill Without Skill

This is not a 'this needs a nerf' type thread, this is me talking about my experience and what that means for me. Destiny has a bunch of one-hit-kill options for every subclass and several weapon types. Most of them make sense to me. For instance, Shoulder Charge. Yes, it's annoying to be killed by it at first, but then you realize they only have a small timeframe to get the charge in and you can kill them whilst charging at you. Sniper headshot. Yeah, it can happen really quick, but they need to hit an exact point on your Guardian and any minor damage they take while aiming will flinch them to such a degree that headshots are impossible unless you are lucky. But then, there are the ones I don't get. Actually, it just is the one. Shotguns. The only drawback a shotgun has is the range. It has to be close quarters. But 99% of maps are close quarters maps and you will be in close quarters whether you want to be or not. Even when I stick to the sides of a room, to the back walls and see a shotgunner, they charge me. I aim, shoot. Headshot. Let my gun restabalize, shoot again. Anothet headshot. They tank both hits and kill me. The hits they take don't falter their aim like a sniper would, and even if it did, it doesn't matter, because hitting me anywhere kills me instantly. And that is a problem to me. Especially the part where it is instant. Taken King introduced Swords. They are great fun, but they require heavy ammo. They are close quarters only and initiating an attack still requires an animation to complete (and fully complete at that) before a kill happens. Shotguns are instantanous. This results in me going up against a shotgunner with a heavy weapon and losing. He can pull the trigger and I will die, meanwhile I have to initiate a strike giving him a second to react with insta-kill ability. When a special weapon is more powerful than a heavy weapon, even more red flags are raised for me. The Chaperone is a gun I acquired early and use from time to time. I like it so much because it is what I think shotguns should be. It's essentially a very close range sniper rifle. I guess as a sniper I am biased towards this gun, but still. Even at face to face range a bodyshot doesn't kill someone. You need to aim, you need to get that headshot. Where all this comes down to for me, is that I think shotguns are in a place to punish anyone who wants to play with skill and/or learn the game. The only drawback of shotguns currently, range, is mitigated by the fact that you always are in the range you need to be. It does not require skill, it does not require map control, it does not require heavy ammo, it does falter under heavy fire. The instant kill is always there. In all this debate around 'Sunbreakers are OP' and 'Thorn used to be OP' and 'Last Word is OP' en all the like; I keep thinking, the true scrub weapon is and has been shotguns all along. It doesn't ask you to do anything but get close, which you always will be. I definitely think shotguns need a huge nerf, I know it will not happen though and I know no one will agree with me. Primairily because people have a lot of succes with shotguns (and why wouldn't you) and don't want that to change so they have to fall back on gun skill. In my perfect world, shotguns would not be able to one shot. You want to get close? It should be risk reward. You can do massive damage up close, but you need to finish the job. You can't get away with 'I have this weapon so I win'. They should do the same damage as a sniper rifle. That is severe bodyshot damage, one shot headshot damage. Falter under fire. That's my experience anyway. Whenever I get killed by a shotgun while I opened fire first and didn't mis a shot I can't help but think it was super cheap. It makes PvP unbearable sometimes for me. I know it won't change. I know almost no one will agree, just wanted to share. I hope that even shotgun users can at least see it from my point of view. Thanks for reading.

  • Yep, I pretty tired of "what the hell just killed me?!" moments and every time it's a shotgun. When someone kills me with something I know took more skill I kind of applaud them. I have stopped using them myself, I actually prefer vestian dynasty, which I feel is more challenging but more fun. I am def not a great PvP player but I have gone from absolutely hating it to really enjoying it. Its always more fun when the match is not shotgun city.

  • It's not all shotguns. If they were more like Invisible hand mk.7. they'd be more balanced

  • The OP shot guns are felwinters, party crasher, matador, etc. The new raid shotgun is fair. I really depends on what weapon they are using. BTW snipers need a lower cap on their amount of aim assist. I'm a sniper and can tell they have too much aim assist

"Sniper headshots are only lucky kills" yea... Right, that's why it's one of the hardest things to do and get super easy if you practice it right!?! I main sniper and use Lastword as backup so I'm only lucky?

  • But you have all the tools to beat a shotgun. Radar( don't let them get close) Sniper Super Any other weapon type really. And last but not least.
carry a -blam!-ing shotgun! You obviously know most of the maps are close quarters!!!
• Shotgun has already been nerfed 4 times. Please shut the -blam!- up and learn to stay at range and use your -blam!-ing radar.

        • Idiot guns shoot faster than swinging swords you seriously compared. You're just another crybaby douche that bitches about getting Insta killed over shotguns which are supposed to be dominant. And thanks to crybabies like you shotguns in pve where it really matters will probably be useless

        • What if shotguns had longer range BUT less damage? No one shots but you can start shooting at a slightly longer distance.

A well timed strafe can beat a shotgun. A jump hop and a skip at the right time can beat a shotgun. A grenade, hop, then melee can beat a shotgun who's gotten too close. A sniper to the body, then primary cleanup can beat a shotgun who's too scrubby to pull out a primary at any point in any game and rushes from miles away. Actually there are plenty of ways to beat shotgun users if you have skill, but at the end of the day, if you're lacking in that department and you're playing people who are skilled and use shotguns, guess what, you're gonna get pwned. That's all there is to it. Same goes for Sunbreakers. I manage to shut them down 66% of the time. But for people who crack under pressure, what can you expect but to get pwned every time.

        • It's not shotguns, if anything, think about how much range shotguns have in real life. Go play battlefield if you want to see where they could be. It's just that the size of Destiny's PvP maps are too small for the weapons within the game.

          • In the amount of time it took you to write this, you could have thought about how to beat shotguns. When holding a sword you can see a shotgunner charging you and start your swing before he gets there, or blink, or shade step. Or pull out your own shotgun.

            • All I see is mega-nerds crying, it's not the shotgun that separates us from you, it's the fact most of us play on 8-10 sensitivity, slide and then focused burst out of a slide to maximize potential movement speed, and then slide around you and pop you in the back and tea bag you, I play crab style so no matter how they nerf shotguns I'll still ruin any kid crying about shotguns until the day I die, I can jump/slide, aim, blink, what have you, all at once, it's not the shotguns fault that you kids get murdered, having a 100m gunfight when connection is involved isn't fun, me slaying your host with reaction time is 5x more fun. Quit crying about shotguns and buy some iq points you 3 sensitivity, car crashing, .5 reaction time scrub nuts.

              • I agree. I think shotguns should be powerful, but only within handshake distance, I'm tired of getting one hit from across the room, literally 30 feet away.

                • If a shotgun didn't kill someone in one shot at close range it would be utterly useless. The high impact shotguns have unbelievably slow fire rates. Making it impossible to get the second shot in on skilled opponents. The low impact/high rate of fire shotguns do not kill people in one hit unless you are literally on top of them. If you let me get that close to you then you have no business complaining.

                    • Salty. But double every shotgun's fire rate, reduce its damage by just under half, and give them all a LITTLE more range. Then bring their PvE multiplier back up. Perfect imo.

High impact, high range shotguns combined with range increasing perks are the problem. Other shotguns do not give such easy kills. There is risk involved since they don't always one shot unless you put every ounce of that spread in someone. I clipped someone with a quarter of the spread in a panic, and I HAD to put another shot in. The Patch A isn't op. The Next Big thing is not op. Conspiracy Theory D is part of a problem that started with Felwinter's Lie, and I daresay the Comedian. Slug rounds should work like snipers, yes. Buckshot (I believe the spread types are called) should not work like snipers. I think they should tweak shotguns a little but not entirely reduce their effectiveness.

                        • If they change shotguns into a two hit kill body shot, then all other primaries will need a longer time to kill. Shotguns should be great in close quarters combat, but less so then swords.
