How to FIX your network problems: ditching cheap ISP-provided routers

If you are using a modem or router provided by your ISP, or if you are using a low-cost budget router (less than $100-$150 in cost) then this may apply to you. Of course, you should check everything suggested by Bungie's Network Troubleshooting Guide. But if you still have problems, here is something to try. SOME BACKGROUND We have had three PS4's on the same network for the past several months, all running Destiny at the same time. But it was impossible to play the game together, because as soon as we started a fireteam, one or more of us would be kicked to orbit and sometimes Destiny itself would error out and close. A number of days of ago, I posted a question about our problems to this forum, and it was suggested (not by Bungie, of course...) that our cable modem might be causing the problem. We were using a cable modem/router device (Comcast calls it a "Gateway") provided by Comcast as part of our internet service (the TC8305C, specifically). For those who don't know, the modem is what communicates over the cable and makes internet service available. The router is what provides WiFi and wired networking to your home. You can buy them separately, or you can use a device that combines the two into one device for convenience. THE PROBLEM Routers and modems provided by ISPs are designed to be as *inexpensive as possible, and can get bogged down and drop packets if there is too much traffic. It DOESN'T MATTER if you have a screaming fast internet connection if your router can't keep up with all the service requests from connected devices. This is why Bungie recommends that you disconnect other devices that may be using up bandwidth. In our case, three connected PS4's running Destiny apparently taxed our budget Comcast router to its limits, until it started dropping packets. For the more technically minded, my hunch is that Destiny sends lots of relatively small packets instead of fewer large ones, as might be expected when streaming video and music. Each packet incurs processing overhead on the router as it is forwarded and NATed to its appropriate destination. I suspect that our cheap Comcast router couldn't process the host of small packets fast enough to keep up. THE SOLUTION Replace your cheap Comcast (or other budget router) with a higher-end device. I configured our Comcast modem to run in "bridge mode," which effectively turned off all router features. I then purchased an connected a Linksys WRT1900AC (~ $200 from Amazon) to port 1 on our Comcast modem. The WRT1900AC sports a multi-core processor cranking at 1.2 Ghz, and can handle a lot more traffic than the cheap Comcast router. Now, our WiFi and wired routing is provided by the very capable Linksys router, and the Comcast modem only operates as a modem. Since making the upgrade, we have had zero problems with network bugs in Destiny. We can have all three PS4's running simultaneously, with the players in a fireteam, and it runs like a dream. I've communicated with other players on this forum who also dropped their bottom-shelf Comcast router in favor of a more respectable one, with good results. IN SUMMARY: GET RID OF YOUR CHEAP COMCAST (OR OTHER LOW-COST) ROUTER The difference in gaming performance may be obvious and immediate.

 • Hmmm when i asked they told me to enable upnp and that destiny doesnt do well with multiple people on the same network. Of course instead of directing the extra cost to consumers they could switch to dedicated servers and fix all that. Lots of AAA titles have them. Why? Probably because they are necessary. P2P is garbage. Dedicated servers is a simple matter of contracting data centers around the globe so that everyone can find the server with the lowest ping, but no, I dont want to fix all the issue's at the cost of the creator's of the game's internal issue's. Before you say someone is cheap, remember that on the box it says nothing about needing a minimum required quality of router or network speed beyond the vague description of "high speed internet required".
