Mature Discussion : Year One Exotics

This thread is for mature discussion. Do not reply if you don't wish to read the entire article and articulate your ideas. Don't make a fool out of yourself here. No one will respect it. --- Problem: Year One Exotics are being left behind, and if "I" wanted to hold onto my Year One Exotics, I should be able to and still use the same guns for 10 years. --- Argument: Let me start with a quote from Bungie,
The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected.
I think this is a good quote to take from Bungie, as originally taken from the December weekly update. It shows that Bungie wanted their weapons to never become obsolete. It means they do not want your weapons to become useless or lose priority. Except, in this context, this was before any DLC has been released and it meant instead they didn't want your vanilla weapons to become useless. I, myself, support the changes Bungie is making, and aim to show why your weapons will NOT become obsolete after the Year Two gear comes. Reasons: -Your weapons lose no power in the Crucible, because there is no level advantages in the Crucible. Alone in the crucible, all of your weapons are still revered the same way and lose no power. Armor works the same way. -Your Year One gear will still be able to complete Year One activities with the same effectiveness. If there's a group of Year Two guardians who could probably blow through VoG, your Year One gear is effective in the same regard. It's not like you'll be kicked because you don't have Year Two gear. You aren't obsolete, you're useful. -Some of your Year One efforts have been tracked and appreciated, giving you a head start, and you'll be able to earn a couple weapons useful in Year Two which are blueprints of your Year One exotics. It's not about transferring your favorite exotics to Year Two into blueprints, it's about giving you a slight advantage over newer players by allowing you to dive right into new activities easier by showing Bungie you had what it takes to brave through Year One. Yes, I assume Year Two gear will be much better than Year One gear, and as such Year One gear will become obsolete in a small way, I would still rather use Year Two gear as opposed to Year One gear in PVE, (I would use whatever I prefer in PvP, no exceptions)... But this progressional system of Year gear is necessary for the way Bungie plans to take this game. Bungie wants this to be a game where whatever time you put in felt like it was worth it, you can always progress your character. Similarly to how MMOs and RPGs are, where you progress characters and have a reputation to them. My favorite weapon is my first ever Khostov, still in my vault. I can't use it, it's obsolete AF. It helped you get through your first mission and that was about it. Your current weapons will get you through all Year One activities the same way right now. They don't get downgraded. There will soon be better gear and weapons, but new players will still need those fate bringers to get themselves to the mightier and more powerful weapons you'll soon be equipping. What if you wanted to use Bronze Armor (Starter gear) in RuneScape(MMORPG) for the rest of your days? Your progression is deterred, the same way in this game. It's necessary, unfortunately, in my opinion. You can still whip out that fatebringer in your VoGs and still do as you do now, same as your Crotas and your PoEs and Trials and Crucible. None of that has changed. What you all have a problem with is simply not being able to use your fatebringer to kill bigger, more monstrous and powerful enemies on the Dreadnaught. It won't do the job, simply. You're going to either have to pick up a Year Two exotic blueprint of your current gear as a head start, or earn some new gear and progress your character to more powerful levels beforehand. Otherwise, it's simply not a possibility unless you want to put a lot more bullets into the more powerful enemies with that Fatebringer. When hunting higher caliber targets, don't use a lower caliber gun. Get the new guns. Counter arguments

  • Why this is being done: 1) To help prevent power creep. For more info on what that is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxszx60ZwGw 2) To allow for a more reasonable preservation of the weapon. I know this sounds backwards but leaving weapons behind allows them to keep the gun as is (or at least mostly as is) for older content rather than nerfing it to the point where it isn't going to be used in any content anyways. 3) To allow them to be more aggressive in weapon design. If they couldn't leave weapons behind, they would have to be so much more conservative in designing new weapons because they'd have to design around it for another X years. This way, they can be more aggressive in designing weapons because if they make another Gjallarhorn, they are able to simply leave the weapon behind and only deal with it for a year. 4) Because overpowered weapons like the Gjallarhorn can cause very restrictive content design issues. If Gjallarhorn was kept then they would have to make sure that bosses in year 2 are somehow Gjallarhorn-proof so people couldn't just bypass the boss/encounter mechanic. This could mean some mechanic like Crota or a ton of health (which would then suck for people without Gjally), which typically don't enjoy.

this was bungie's response too. I think it was disrespectful to the community. oh we are able to use old weapons and armor in old content. wow I feel much better now. it's not like I've been doing that for the past year. our complaints were that we couldn't use them for year 1 content. thanks, bungie (and you, the OP). you gave us the response we were hoping for. we are not dumb. we know we can still use them in old content. this was never our complaint. we want to play the new content with our favorite guns and armor. THAT is the main issue here. when I saw that bungie said we will still be able to use them in year 1 content, I was like "really, that's your response?" it was disrespectful. btw, iron banner and trials enable level advantages.
What if you wanted to use Bronze Armor (Starter gear) in RuneScape(MMORPG) for the rest of your days? Your progression is deterred, the same way in this game.
key word: wanted. I should decide when I want my character to progress. and by playing the new content and upgrading stuff (new and old) I am already progressing anyway.

      • I'm a level 34 titan and I started destiny a little late so I didn't get all of the year one exotics. This sucks because I realllyyyyy want the thorn and last word but now I can't get either of them

      • I have read your opinions and respect them. But first I want to say I have preordered TTK and will give it a fair try. Having said that I'm overall disappointed with the exotic situation. And to be honest I am still even about legendary gear. I'm not trying to sway minds I just want to explain my opinion. I have spent so much (now too much) time grinding for weapons and gear. And then leveling up gear. I have loadouts on each character that fits certain situations. Based on that statement you displayed above I had thought that I could keep these loadouts through the journey of destiny. And then they change their mind with no announcement and make this gear irrelevant. What burns me more is they can't make up their mind. Every 3 months things change. I do not really play crucible that much so that argument is not strong for me. I do however play iron banner. Which now means I need new gear (more iron banner grind too) to be successful there. So again that argument seems incomplete. Year one still viable? I've played "year one" content to the ground. Yes I know some strikes Have been reworked. And original story with northbot. But I am tired of year one. Maybe it's now a sour taste due to playing the strikes and raids and missions repeatedly grinding for things that I thought i was smartly investing time in. So while this is an argument my personal opinion is I'm done with year one. Listen, new gear is awesome. But maybe Bungie made their initial weapons and perks too good. Or maybe TDB and HoW weapons are truly that bad. Either way I've lost my confidence in Bungie. It seems like they are making crap up as they go along. If they release TTK as is fine. But stick with that. No more crazy changes to the gear situation. It's getting redundant. The last thing I want to say is that most of my time played was grinding for gear and leveling gear. Well guess what? Now I know that time is pointless. I will play the story once. The raid once (maybe not due to new leveling up to 40 first) and the new strikes once. After that I'm done with TTK. No more collecting exotics. No more trying for the perfect loadouts. They have taken away all MY reasons for putting time into this game. My humble and honest opinion. I'm again, going to give TTK a chance. But now it's on a pedestal and one slip I'm done with destiny. They have waffled and dragged us along and I've learned my lesson. Thanks for the mature post. It's appreciated. Happy hunting!

        • In all honesty your right , I feel all exotics ( a few exceptions of course , ghorn) though should be viable in endgame activities of ttk , and crucible as well ( all special events as well) that way the game still has multiple aspects in which the exotics can allow for diverse builds

        • na, not in my eyes. i look at it that i have a good run but the grinding gameplay over a whole year just to take away things you worked hard for isnt on. im not doing it all over again this year just to lose everything again. legendaries anoyed me but this made me cancel my preorder. they should have just made destiny 2 if they planed on dropped all the old stuff

          • How do you feel about exotics? The diversity they created in particular. Don't you feel like by removing them they are just removing more options from the player? ( yes people used overused ghally/thorn but that was simply bungies inability to put weapon patches out in a reasonable time. Like 7 months REALLY!?) I felt like exotics are what helped create more uniqueness in play styles for the player. Especially when you used armor/weapon combos that worked. Legendaries I understand though and I'm actually happy we can't use those in year 2.

People mostly aren't dumb, they just disagree. I think these points have been implied if not outright said by Bungie. As for needing to break it down, anyone who needed it explained in that kind of detail isn't going to be bothered to read your post anyway. Anyone who is not dumb but simply disagrees will probably find your tone condescending.

          • All the weapons they have made since vanilla has been horse shit... That's why everyone has been using their VOG weapons and Gjallarhorn. If the new gear is good, then fine... But by their track record I'd feel better knowing I can go back to my VOG weapons just in case the new stuff is also horse shit. And btw your post isn't "mature" its polite and condescending... Like the people in the forum don't already know they can use their old gear for old stuff and crucible. Thanks and have a nice day!

            • Ultimately I'm not fussed. Carry them over, don't carry them over. I'll use what I like the feel of and i definitely would prefer variety. However, where bungie have irritated me a little is the flip-flopping between allowing you to upgrade / ascend, and not. Their attitude has changed with every new release. If this is a ten year game, gear evolution is necessary. But please can it be as part of a wider plan. Don't build an expectation of rolling weapons forward into new content then take it away 3 months later. That's where they've dropped the ball in my view. The way they're handling it will make a lot of people take a break until ttk as they perceive no point in chasing new loot, which adds extra fun to an already fun game. And who's to say those people will be back without knowing what they are getting back into.

              • OMG we have one found....one with some sense. I thank you guardian for this post. P.s if you managed to collect some Yr 1 exotics...it is those same ones that will give you a second year advantage...because they are being upgraded.... i'm sure you will be able to get them straight away if you had their earlier prequisite Y1 version.

Because they doubled the vault space it means I can keep my favourite exotics for other dlc content as it will still be viable, It will just be a matter of choosing the right weapon for the right job. Year one weapons for year one dlc and year two weapons for the new content. So as I see it they are not really obsolete yet. I am happy with The choices Bungie made for us. I am happy to be getting new weapons.

                • something iv not heard much about is the fact that all exotics alongised weapons from year two will be getting the new ability called(i cant remeber, something about sacrificing higher weapons to lower weapons to make them stronger) that will allow you make the lower tier weapon match up remember in that titch stream we saw that 290 wepaon get sacrificed to the 160 and that 160 became 288 they said we can do that to exotics aswell, they didnt say select exotics, the only time i heard they were selecting exotics were for the 2.0 versions there making so if im correct we can bring our year 1 exotics up to stuff(albeit close, the specifics on wether or not you could 'sacrifice' multiple times to bring to standard or not was unspecified, alongide if exotics could have just other exotics sacrificed to them or not, or if you had to sacrifice something of higher dmg output or if it could be lower and the upgrades simply compounded) so cheer up everyone, unless im wrong in wich case id enjoy if someone could tell me

                  • At first I was pissed thst Bungie are leaving some Exotics behind but then I thought (hoped) that the ones that are relegated to Y1 have been REPLACED with something of equal calibre. And those with Y2 versions couldn't be replaced so we're improved.

                  • The reward weapon from the previous raid should always be useful in the next raid. They got this right with Vex and Crotas End. Necrochasm should be THE GUN for Kings Fall, until you get those raid weapons.

                  • I'm a little sad about losing some of my first year exotics, but I cannot wait for the new the last word and suros. It seems like there adding some of the most liked weapons. I don't think they're adding ghorn because I think they want players to use different guns.

                  • It is Bungie's fault for not making weapons better each DLC, not the players who like the power of the year one weapons. Leaving weapons behind is Bungie's way of saying they couldn't improve their weapons or were to lazy to. Also, they should have never let us ascend old weapons, but it was an easy way to manufacture content for that POE flop of a DLC. I bought TTK and look forward to using new weapons, however, I understand why people are annoyed.

                    • I agree with the weapons being left behind but not the armor. All the exotic armor gave unique perks that changed how you played, leaving this behind will eliminate these perks and limit some of the different builds for your characters in the new content.
