Why do people like ODST's Campaign so much more than Reach's?

I mean, sure, Reach was a button-pressing, plot-light military-focused grit-fest. But it was also a technical marvel, with Bungie's first ever space flight level in a game (and the only one to this day), and unprecedented sense of scale and emotion for a Halo title. I understand that ODST had likeable characters compared with Reach's, but the plot was only slightly less dull than Reach's, and level design was standard Halo fare, nothing truly amazing besides maybe Coastal Highway. Don't get me started on how badly Bungie failed at the open world, something that has infamously continued in Destiny.

  • ODST has a very simple plot; squad is scattered, reunite squad. It also has amazing music and atmosphere. Reach has a plot that gets complex and doesn't answer questions while also being much darker in tone. ODST explains all the relevant plot details; Covenant Supercarrier is attacking Earth, it has to be destroyed. FTL jump scattered the squad, the Engineers are biological supercomputers and one defects to the UNSC bringing with it "everything we ever wanted to know about the Covenant". And the story ends in a great way. Reach dangles plot threads, introduces characters who are supposed to be important but fails to explain WHY. If you've never read the Halo wiki or books you have ZERO idea who this Halsey lady is or why the Spartans are taking orders from her. Personally I think Reach is the better game and stands as Bungie's best game that I've played, but ODST is my favorite because it's more fun. Reach has full matchmaking support and lets you customize Noble 6, ODST...forces you to manually form teams for Campaign or Firefight.
